The 2019 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru is clearly a step up from the Charmes-Chambertin, offering deeper and more intense red fruit, rose petal and undergrowth aromas. There is also a more tangible marine influence at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with very good structure. The bouquet is autumnal, with vestiges of red cherries and tangible marine and moorland scents, and background orange pith. The palate is medium-bodied and has a lilting quality, but there is grip here, quite chalky in texture and obviously with less flesh than either the 1985 or 1990, so you have to accept its brittle finish. There are two types of limestone in the vineyard here (yellow and white) and together they make this is a very sappy, chalky, refreshing wine, an impression that's enhanced by the acidity of the wine. Maybe not quite the mineralité of previous vintages? The palate is medium-bodied with orange rind and allspice on the entry. Showing fine weight, there's a little sinew within this cuvée and a tobacco-tinged finish. Quite a "serious" 2021 from Rousseau - I am fascinated to see how this will show once in bottle.Inc. Deep, dark and almost animalistic in nature, the 1997 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni boasts a rich ruby hue in the glass without any bricking at the rim. Balsamic spice, dried black cherries, leather, minty herbs and hints of mocha form its beguiling bouquet. Its textures are velvety-smooth, yet the wine is surprisingly lifted with tart berries and sweet inner herbal tones, as silty tannins slowly saturate toward the close. While still lightly structured, which I believe the 1997 always will be, the finale remains completely pleasurable and long, with a mentholated freshness and a bitter hint of espresso that lingers.Inc. Deep, dark and almost animalistic in nature, the 1997 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni boasts a rich ruby hue in the glass without any bricking at the rim. Balsamic spice, dried black cherries, leather, minty herbs and hints of mocha form its beguiling bouquet. Its textures are velvety-smooth, yet the wine is surprisingly lifted with tart berries and sweet inner herbal tones, as silty tannins slowly saturate toward the close.
