The 2023 Dolcetto d'Alba is a jewel-like magenta color and is lifted and fresh on the nose with highlights of red fruit accenting the pretty floral and darker berry notes of the Dolcetto, along with notes of fresh purple flowers, ripe berries, and wet stones. The palate offers brilliant intensity, complemented by electric acidity, ripe fruit, and a snappy, crunchy feel that persists through the finish. It offers a good deal of nervous energy at this early stage and will benefit from another 6-12 months in the bottle, although it should retain its poppy freshness for a considerable amount of time. Mascarello's 2015 Langhe Nebbiolo is frankly more compelling than most Barolos or Barbarescos. A huge overachiever, the 2015 possesses striking depth in all of its dimensions. Creamy, ample and super-expressive, with beautifully layered fruit and bright aromatics, the 2015 simply has it all. Readers who can find the 2015 should not hesitate, as it is an absolute and total stunner. Don't miss it.Inc. VAT£581.09 -
Vinous (88)
Sweet dried red cherry, mint, sweet tobacco, orange peel and incense are all lifted in the 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo. Translucent and pretty, the 2017 is a touch ethereal, but there is a good bit of tannic grip. Because of low yields in Barolo, Maria Teresa Mascarello made this wine from purchased grapes from San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, which is in the Barbaresco zone.Inc. VAT£120.26 -
(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (88)
The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo offers plenty of charm and immediacy. Dark cherry, spice, tobacco and leather are nicely pushed forward. There is plenty to like in the 2018, even if the Nebbiolo does not reach the heights of the very best editions.Inc. VAT£471.95 -
(1x75cl) 2020Vinous (93)
The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo is sublime. Dark cherry, plum, lavender licorice and crushed flowers infuse the 2020 with striking detail. Fresh and vibrant, with terrific depth and character, the 2020 shows how captivating this vintage is. The Langhe Nebbiolo is made from purchased fruit sourced in Barbaresco, Treiso and Alba. It saw a relatively short ferment and was aged in cask for two years. It is essentially a Barbaresco in all but name, intentionally done in a forward, early drinking style.Inc. VAT£160.40 -

Halliday Wine Companion (96)
Fruit off the Leongatha vineyard, destemmed, wild-yeast fermented, left 2 weeks on skins and aged in French oak, 25% new, for 14 months. A selection of the best barrels was then put aside for the Estate. Striking aromatics set the scene: a heady mix of florals, forest floor, blood orange and spiced cherries. The palate unfurls with a core of sweet-savoury flavours from fruit and oak, fine tannins and everything superbly integrated and aligned. There’s complexity, detail and definition all in one.Inc. VAT£684.68 -
The Real Review (95)
Medium full ruby with a tinge of purple; the aromas are of red fruits, the profile lean and elegant, with bountiful drying tannins, and touches of foresty pinot mystery. The wine is lean and drying on the aftertaste. Nice elegant wine, worth a little cellaring also.Inc. VAT£450.18 -
(6x75cl) 2021The Real Review (98)
Full ruby with purple tints and the bouquet is earthy/broken rock, ferrous/iron-like qualities with a touch of oak adding a smoky, fivespice aroma note and aftertaste. The wine is deep and mouth-filling, showing good concentration and drive, muscle and grip, and an enduring aftertaste. A big, dramatic finish: a peacock's tail. Beautiful aromatics: a serious pinot noir indeed.Inc. VAT£1,139.15 -

An aroma highly suggestive of freshly brewed tea and ripe tangerines suggests overripeness. On the palate, the wine is diffuse, lacking direction, and is somewhat watery and uninteresting. This is a curious and unappealing rendition of Batailley. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 2/79.Inc. VAT£648.80 -

Beautiful wine. Very dark ruby-red. Wonderful blackberry, mineral and violet aromas. Full-bodied, with round and velvety tannins and a long, beautifully fruity finish.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2005. -JSInc. VAT£1,079.21 -

An attractive black/ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of sweet curranty fruit and new oak. Medium-bodied, with good ripeness, this sound, straightforward, well-made wine lacks depth and complexity, but it will provide pleasant, foursquare drinking for another 12-14 years.Inc. VAT£782.26 -
(12x75cl) 2009Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (95)
Love this wine, I drink it regularly at home, and it always performs excellently in blind tastings, delivering so much of what we love about Pauillac. Ruby red colour, still vibrant, full of silky black fruits, pencil lead and mint leaf, revs up through the mid palate with layers of bilberry, cassis, slate and crushed rocks. You will get longer-lasting Pauillac 2009s, but this is thoroughly enjoyable and built to share. 55% new oak for ageing, Philippe Casteja owner.Inc. VAT£644.64 -
Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (96)
We are in full on classic Pauillac territory here, sculpted and balanced juicy blackcurrant and bilberry fruits, great lift on the finish, one of best value wines of the tasting, sleek tannins, studded with freshly cut herbs and charcoal. For a long time the 2009 was the best of the two vintages at Batailley, but the 2010 is now taking the lead. 55% new oak for ageing, Philippe Casteja owner.Inc. VAT£681.84 -
Wine Advocate (91+)
The 2014 Batailley has an attractive bouquet, lilting scents of redcurrant and raspberry coulis, quite floral and very precise. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good depth and body, rounded for Batailley and less austere than usual. It feels closed towards the finish, tight-lipped, but there is certainly grip and presence here. It will require several years in bottle before it can show its true potential, but there is a sense of class to this Batailley that I suspect will become more evident with maturity. Tasted twice with consistent notes.Inc. VAT£541.00 -
