Wine Advocate (98)The NV Único Reserva Especial 2025 Release was produced with a blend of wines from 2011, 2012 and 2013, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.86 and five grams of acidity. It has the core of the 2012, possibly the higher percentage in the blend too, which gives the power and structure with the freshness and tension of 2013, which also provides some balsamic characteristics, and less of the 2011. It has a very harmonious and subtle nose, and the wine shows extra complexity and elegance. It has the Único nose with more nuance and subtleness, but what I liked the most was the silky texture and the elegance of the tannins, as usual combining more developed characteristics with elegance and freshness. This is another stellar release of their non-vintage classical blend, slowly going back to the style of yesteryear. A total of 18,518 bottles and 261 magnums were produced. It was bottled in May 2021. |

This is a blending exercise in search of the Vega Sicilia character, with complexity; the older wines provide nuance and elegance and the younger wines add freshness. This has a magnificent palate; it's sleek, polished and elegant, with fine-grained tannins. A total of 18,618 bottles and 264 magnums were produced. It was bottled in May 2022. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2012 Valbuena was cropped from a vintage with a very dry and warm summer that resulted in very healthy grapes. Since the 2010 vintage, this wine is fermented plot by plot following the findings from a soils study they did. The élevage is in French and American oak barrels that on average lasts some 18 months followed by another 18 months in 20,000-liter oak vats, but of course some lots had more time in barrique and others more time in vat. It has ripe tannins and a powerful mouthfeel but with a soft texture. Even if it's not widely mentioned, it always has had some French grapes, mainly Merlot, but this 2012 is the first Valbuena ever to be really 100% Tempranillo—because the Merlot didn't behave well in this warm and dry year. It follows the path opened by the 2010, more precise and elegant, rounded by that extra time in larger vats to finish polishing the tannins. I find this 2012 halfway between 2010 and 2011. It has depth and elegance, more serious than Alión, which is always the (maybe unfair) comparison. 174,545 bottles and some larger formats were filled in April 2014. |

Wine Advocate (96)2017 was marked by the frost of the night between April 27 and 28 that Vega Sicilia fought with their anti-frost towers. The end of the season was warm, and the overall rain was low, 235 liters. The 2017 Valbuena is marked by these circumstances, produced with 94% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 6% Merlot, with good ripeness (14.5% alcohol) and mellow acidity (4.65 grams of tartaric acid and a pH of 3.85). The grapes were cooled down and took three to four days of maceration to start fermenting with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in a combination of new and used French and American 225-liter oak barrels and 21,000-liter oak vats for almost three years. The result, for whatever reason, was nothing short of spectacular. The wine is perfumed, floral, expressive and balsamic like few vintages before. It doesn't feel like a 2017 at all; it is harmonious, and the tannins were fine. It's an amazing Valbuena that clearly transcends the character of the vintage. What I see here is that since 2010, the wine has a very high consistency. And in 2017 it excels. 170,071 bottles, 5,516 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2020. |

Happily, it’s extraordinarily good. Consisting of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, the nose shows red and black berries, tea leaf, violets and a hint of reduction while the palate is marked by reined-in power – lovely fruit purity, fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. It’s focused and tight with a finish that’s long and dry and should mature with benefit. |

Wine Mag (96)Whereas it’s the 2020 vintage of MR de Compostella and the 2019 of Kanonkop Paul Sauer that are currently on the market, Helderberg property Vergelegen is only now about to release the 2017 of its top-end red that is V. Happily, it’s extraordinarily good. Consisting of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, the nose shows red and black berries, tea leaf, violets and a hint of reduction while the palate is marked by reined-in power – lovely fruit purity, fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. It’s focused and tight with a finish that’s long and dry and should mature with benefit. |
