Vinous (93)The 2020 Barolo Colonnello is a big, strapping wine. Dark-fleshed fruit, new leather, licorice, herbs, menthol, licorice and torrefaction amplify the wine's natural breadth. Wine Advocate (97)This wine blew me away. The 2009 Barolo Riserva Granbussia is a proud achievement and an expression of rare beauty. This wine will be released this fall, some nine years after the harvest. Only 3,000 bottles were produced. The Granbussia narrative is one of elegance and refinement. The fruit comes from two vineyard parcels in the greater Bussia cru and was co-fermented (instead of being blended after malolactic fermentation). So much fruit was dropped during the summer growing cycle that the harvest came later than usual. This allowed for slow, even ripening and a deeper sense of aromatic complexity that you immediately identify here. The nose is redolent of wet earth and autumnal leaf with white truffle and forest berry. The wine offers extreme Nebbiolo purity with anise seed, tar and licorice. |

Matthew Jukes (19.5)When they started co-fermenting this wine in 2005, it offered an integration and balance to this label that was missing when it was previously a blended wine. This is never more evident than in this incredible wine. The nose is utterly stunning a mere two and half years after my first taste, and it can only be described as a stellar creation. While the palate is closed, contemplative, hugely dense, and imposing, the link between the floral, tobacco, tea, and chypre-soaked nose and the extraordinary palate is gripping. There is no gap between perfume and palate ? no truck and trailer, just impeccable limousine. Sensational. |

Matthew Jukes (19.5)The more powerful and structured elements are kept to the back of the palate, and you are afforded a very generous five or so seconds to revel in the luxuriousness of the indulgent fruit notes before the tannins swarm in and add a shockingly crunchy finish. There is so much red fruit (and not as much obvious Romirasco black fruit) than I expected, and there is impressive anti-fruit sappiness coming from the earth, trunk and powerful surrounding vineyard nuances. Vinous (96)The 2015 Barolo Gran Bussia is a very sexy wine. Ripe, seamless and inviting, the 2015 is impeccably done. Fully ripe tannins wrap around a core of plum, blood orange, sweet spice, pomegranate and new French oak. All the elements are nicely balanced. There's a lot to like about the Gran Bussia, but I find the oak imprint a touch strong. On the other hand, at nearly ten years of age, the 2015 is quite fresh, which deserves to be noted. I find pricing for the Gran Bussia completely out of touch with reality, but it is a very beautiful wine, there's no doubt about it. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2014 Barolo Bussia Romirasco shows the merits of strict fruit selection in a challenging vintage. Only 4,620 bottles were made in order to preserve the highest quality obtainable. This is a complete and generous expression that starts off with a succession of black fruit aromas and continues to lighter notes of anise seed, tar, licorice and blue violet. The mouthfeel offers volume and texture with nicely integrated tannins. In order to get this quality, fruit selection was key, says Giacomo Conterno. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)Pure perfection in Cabernet, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Alejandro Bulgheroni is all varietal and comes two-thirds from Oakville with the balance from sites in St. Helena and Rutherford. Aged 20 months in 70% new French oak and put together by Philippe Melka and Michel Rolland, it has an incredibly pure, full-bodied, massive yet weightless style that I suspect couldn’t be achieved anywhere outside of Napa Valley. Cassis, blackberries, leafy herbs, lead pencil shavings, and tobacco leaf are just some of the nuances here, and it’s full-bodied, deep, and concentrated on the palate while maintaining an ethereal, seamless, utterly perfect balance between its fruit, alcohol, tannins, and acidity. As good as it gets, it needs just 2-4 years in the cellar and will evolve gracefully for at least 20-25 years. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97+)Also a classic expression of its terroir, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard boasts a ripe, opulent, powerful style as well as notes of darker currants, tobacco, lead pencil, chocolate, and gravelly earth. I always find a Graves-like richness as well as a sense of earth from this site, and this beauty has it all in spades. Decanter (99)Winemaker Matt Sands has turned out perfection from the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard in St. Helena with his Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in 2021. Here, a barrel sample offers Cabernet Sauvignon as 92% of the blend, with Cabernet Franc filling out the rest. In the typical Lithology style, this is an inky black wine with a sumptuously silky and satiny profile, but in 2021, there is freshness, lift, and tension. The full-bodied palate offers fine, intricate tannins that are assertive yet harmonious with the dark berry fruit. At the same time, a rich vein of iron-like minerality and earth mingles with fragrant cedarwood, herbs and slivers of dark chocolate on a long and satisfying finish—polished, expressive, and delicious, all from an exceptional site in a terrific vintage. I am absolutely a candidate for a 100-point wine and will taste it again in the early months of 2024. |

Decanter (100)It is an absolute stand-out wine that is just seamless, with a purity of dark fruit flavours and spices balanced by threads of distinct minerality, freshness, and tension. Pure blackberry and black cherry fruit notes are tinged with bright capsicum. The depth and intensity of this wine are just as bewildering as the freshness conveyed on the palate. The dusty tannin backbone, a classic quality of the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane vineyard in St. Helena, frames a panoply of savoury spices, crushed herbs, liquorice and black ironstone minerality, delivering a perfect Cabernet Franc in the heady, rich, opulent and mineral-driven style Lithology is known for, but with tremendous energy in the 2021s, which conveys a real elegance to match this wine’s intensity. |

Full-bodied, ripe, and polished on the palate, it stays relatively compact and will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97+)The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is more closed aromatically, yet still offers impressive red, blue, and black fruits as well as savory herbs and dried flower nuances. It too is full-bodied, with a focused, tight, straight style on the palate that warrants 4-5 years of cellaring. |
