James Suckling (98)I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. Wine Advocate (95+)This is a terrific wine and one of the new releases from Montalcino that I happily include on a short list of top recommendations. The Argiano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very lively bouquet that is already singing despite the young age of this new release. The wine opens to a dark ruby color with garnet highlights. The bouquet shows a large span of wild berry, earth, licorice spice and medicinal herb aromas. This vintage also reveals a pretty floral character with dried rose potpourri and lavender buds. After fermentation, the wine is aged slowly for 30 months in large oak botte (including 10-, 30- and 50-hectoliter capacity), thus restricting oxygen and gently slowing its evolution. However, the 2015 vintage is naturally expressive and exuberant, and that's the main takeaway here. |

Vinous (89)The 2015 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva lifts up with a vibrant and spicy display, showing bright cherry and strawberry with mentholated herbal tones, crushed stone and a hint of white pepper. Nervous acids add further tension, while grippy tannins slowly saturate, leading to an intensely structured finish. The 2015 Riserva will need a good amount of time to soften, and I don’t believe its fruit component will be able to keep up. |

James Suckling (97)A very polished red with cloves and caramel, on top of black cherries, mushrooms and forest floor. Black olives, too. It's full-bodied with polished tannins and lovely depth all the way through. Lightly chewy. Juicy black-cherries and savory black-olive character. Complex. Drink after 2025. |

Kerin O'Keefe (97)Aromas of ripe dark-skinned berry, blue flower, camphor and pipe tobacco form the enticing nose on the gorgeous 2019 Brunello from Argiano. Delicious and elegantly structured, the palate also has captivating, youthful tension that lifts mature black cherry, raspberry compote, blood orange, licorice and dried herb. A backbone of firm, refined tannins provide support while bright acidity keeps it perfectly balanced. |

Vinous (89)The 2015 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva lifts up with a vibrant and spicy display, showing bright cherry and strawberry with mentholated herbal tones, crushed stone and a hint of white pepper. It takes a more savory turn on the palate, as silky textures usher in tart red and black berries, laced with salty minerals. Nervous acids add further tension, while grippy tannins slowly saturate, leading to an intensely structured finish. The 2015 Riserva will need a good amount of time to soften, and I don’t believe its fruit component will be able to keep up. |
