The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is located in the lieu-dit of Mazis-Bas, between the vines of Bernard Dugat (Dugat-Py) and Domaine Maume. Matured in 90% new oak it has a fine clarity on the nose, the oak a little prominent, but that will meld together with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit mixed with blueberry, vanilla and a slither of marmalade. This is quite opulent but it remains nicely controlled with a long finish that is in the same style as Bernard Dugat’s Mazis. This is a knockout wine from Roty, a vin de garde that demands considerable cellaring.

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is very well defined on the nose, which features detailed raspberry, dark cherry and crushed stone aromas; subtle rose petal scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fresh and vibrant on the entry. Apricot and marmalade notes appear toward the finish. It does cut away a little swiftly on the aftertaste and as such, like the Griottes-Chambertin, it does not quite match my expectations from barrel.

The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly animally nose at first, but it soon shakes off its feral element to reveal cassis and boysenberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, liquorice-infused black fruit with blood orange towards the confit finish. This should age well over the next 20 years.

The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has an almost understated bouquet disguising the intensity of fruit that is remarkable for such a cool growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a killer line of acidity that binds together its effervescent, blood orange and dark chocolate infused finish. Give it 10 years if you want to avoid a penalty.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a gorgeous fragrant floral bouquet with bunches of roses complementing the vibrant red fruit. Wonderful intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannins, quite spicy towards the finish with a slightly confit towards the end. This is destined to age very well. Superb.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was reduced to a single barrel for the first time ever. It does not quite have the complexity or terroir expression of the Champans on the nose, a little stoic and distant. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and fine acidity, plus a healthy sprinkling of white pepper and sage towards the persistent finish. Not quite the élan of the Champans, yet it pulls together nicely.

The 2016 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and touches of sage and thyme. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and crescendoing gently to a slightly meaty, delineated, long finish. I suspect this might close down for a few years, but there is huge potential here.

The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru offers attractive black fruit mixed with briary, crushed rock and sea cave aromas on the nose that is all quite captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good depth and grip with a saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Classy, old school Volnay.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru, matured in 20% new oak, has darker fruit than the Fremiets, touches of blackberry and briary complementing the raspberry and cranberry. The oak here is neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, silkier than the Fremiets in texture with a piquant finish. Delightful and so fresh!

The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru, matured in 20% new oak, has an expressive and quite open, floral bouquet with red cherries, undergrowth, crushed strawberry and a touch of black tea. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and poised with good substance towards the finish. This is very refined and classy. Closure: Diam 5

Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has much more brightness and delineation than the Fremiets this year, with red cherries, wild strawberries and just a touch of iodine and sous-bois. This is nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine structure, pliant tannins and a harmonious finish. Not the most complex Champans encountered from this address, yet it has class.

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru les Fremiets has an elegant bouquet with scents of briary, woodland and red berry fruit. There is lovely purity of fruit here, great transparency. The palate is well balanced with fine structure, quite firm tannin, superb focus with red merging with black fruit towards the slightly saline finish. This is a great wine from Jean-Pierre Chalot.
