Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)

From En la Poulotte (Couchey) and the better-known Les Longeroies, half and half. Mid ruby colour. The nose offers a very elegant floral pinot, there being a proportion of whole bunches. Lifted with light cherry fruit and a touch of orange zest. Given the lightness of tread of this Marsannay, there is delicious persistence. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted Nov 2024.

Vinous (88-91)

(25% vendange entier; aging in 30% new oak; made from what Thomas Dinel described as a full crop, this wine had already been racked once by the time of my visit): Medium red. Slightly reduced aromas of strawberry, white pepper, herbs and toast. A rather, delicate, light style with sexy spices and a touch of sweetness but only modest force. Finishes with easygoing tannins and a touch of dryness. Attractive, aromatic wine if a bit lacking in stuffing.

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Ormes 1er Cru is 25% whole clusters, matured in 35% new oak. It has a floral bouquet of bright red fruit infused with wilted rose petals. The palate is well balanced, displaying crisp acidity, fleshy ripe tannin and vibrant red fruit, and hints of brown spice on the finish. A Morey designed to give pleasure. Not long-term, but quite delicious.

Vinous (90-92)

(30% vendange entier; from 60-year-old vines): Medium red. Higher-toned strawberry and game aromas. Tactile and alive in the mouth, with lovely lift to the sweet flavors of raspberry, strawberry and brown spices. This seriously structured wine finishes fresh and persistent, with lingering brown spices, harmonious tannins and a suggestion of saline minerality

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru includes around 25% whole clusters, matured in 35% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet with touches of truffle and mushroom influencing the red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, light on its feet but long and tender on the finish. Excellent.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru is 50% whole bunch with no new oak. It has a more powerful bouquet compared to the Clos des Ormes, although it does not exude the same mineralité or finesse. On the other hand, the palate is very well balanced and seems to have more depth and precision than the Clos des Ormes, leading to a compelling mineral-driven, saline finish that lingers for 45+ seconds. Superb.

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru, which includes 50% whole bunch, works much better on the nose compared to the Clos des Ormes with detailed raspberry, cranberry and briary scents, the absence of new oak an assiduous decision. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine definition, fine grip with a lively, tensile finish. Very fine and it disguises the 14.6° alcohol pretty well thanks to the low pH.

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru, like the Clos des Ormes, was a little muted on the nose when tasted from barrel. It opens almost reluctantly with orange zest scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, more body than the Clos des Ormes with a broad-shouldered but balanced finish. Give this some time in bottle.

60% whole bunch vinification, no new wood. An even crimson colour. While retaining its earthy style, the fruit is fuller and altogether classier than Clos des Ormes. Strawberry and raspberry, middleweight and with fair length. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.

5 star. New in 2019 and a great success this year. “Our baby Clos de la Roche” they think. Dark colour but the bouquet shows how well balanced this is. Beautifully perfumed, floral even. 80% whole bunch, one new barrel in three. This is really lovely just to sniff at. Much more power behind than I expected, with really fresh lifted dark red fruit and some minerals. Long finish. A real star in this cellar. Tasted: November 2021

Still in barrel, one new barrel in four. A fine lively mid purple with an exquisite bouquet, ethereal hillside Morey lifted further by the whole bunches (80%). An attractive middleweight red fruit across the palate, with some white pepper to finish. Another excellent wine from this super vineyard. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.

Maison. One barrel, one year old wood. 80% whole bunch. Clear fresh mid purple. Superb energy from the fruit on the nose, with the oak relegated to the background. Undemonstrative yet fine, not the weightiest Murgers but the essentials of the vineyard are there and the finish is long.

Burghound (88-91)

(this comes mostly from the Vosne side of the commune and in particular from Aux Allots, Les Lavières, Les Argillats, Aux St. Julien, Petite Charmotte and les Herbues plus Plantes au Baron in Prémeaux). A subtle but not imperceptible application of wood can be found on the red berry and earth aromas that display a note of crushed herbs. Despite not being particularly dense, the middle weight flavors exhibit good power on the austere, firm and serious finale. This is very Nuits in style and a wine that’s going to require at least some patience.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)

Though the grapes are purchased, the Marchand-Tawse team are responsible for the viticulture here, so it is effectively but not officially a domaine wine. Picked late in the piece, on 24th September, and vinified with 60% whole bunches, the Petite Charmotte is still in barrel with 30% new. A pretty pink ruby colour, extremely cheerful bouquet, whole bunch on the later picked fruit seems to have worked well. White pepper at the finish. Nothing forced, very harmonious, a little darker fruit but classy. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2018 Barbaresco Tradizione is a soft, easygoing wine. Dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, brown spice and dried flowers are signs of a Barbaresco that is maturing at a pretty fast clip. Even so, the 2018 will drink well for another few years.

Dark red cherries, tobacco, wild flowers, menthol and spices flesh out in the 2009 Barbaresco Camp Gros. A big, broad-shouldered Barbaresco, the 2009 boasts tremendous depth, power and richness. Firm and bigger than the Gaiun, the Camp Gros also has an attractive upper register of brilliant aromatics that add energy and perfume.

(done in small barrels, 30% new): Good medium red. Classic balsamic Martinenga aromas of flowers, tobacco and spices. Spicy and densely packed; showing more dimension and medicinal reserve than the Gaiun. Most impressive today on the spicy aftertaste, where the wine fills the retronasal passage and leaves it quivering. Quite powerful and long. But this wine is still wearing an overcoat, notes winemaker Jeff Chilcott, adding that it will not be released until late next year.
