James Suckling (95-96)There is a really pretty, powdery-tannin texture to this, with dark-berry and currant character. Some orange peel, too. It’s full and layered with a sense of precision and focus. Framed and open-grained in the texture. Velvety. Real Pauillac personality here. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. May be better than 2022. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90)The 2016 Fleur de Pédesclaux has a generous, rounded bouquet of wild strawberry and blackberry fruit mixed with briar and tobacco aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like purity on the entry, displaying fine tannin and light grip but offering ebullient red berry fruit on the detailed finish. This is impressive for a second wine and will probably drink well after a couple of years. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (88)The 2020 Fleur de Pédesclaux has a more open-knit bouquet than I anticipated with vanillary red fruit and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant sappiness on the entry, fine acidity, cohesive with quite an elegant, pure finish. This is a very commendable Deuxième Vin that surpasses my expectation from barrel. |

Pedres Blanques Rouge 2018 embodies the exquisite craftsmanship of the esteemed Pedres Blanques winery, nestled in the heart of Priorat. This exceptional red wine is crafted from a meticulously selected blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, and Syrah grapes, cultivated in the region’s stony, mineral-rich vineyards. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes ageing for 12 months in French oak barrels, imparting subtle notes of vanilla and spice while allowing the robust tannins to soften gracefully. On the palate, Pedres Blanques Rouge 2018 reveals layers of ripe dark berries, complemented by hints of tobacco and licorice, culminating in a long, elegant finish. This vintage exemplifies the harmonious balance and depth that discerning connoisseurs seek, making it a distinguished addition to any fine wine collection. ``` |

The Pedres Blanques Rouge 2019 is a distinguished red wine meticulously crafted in the heart of Catalonia’s renowned Priorat region. Produced by the esteemed Familia Fixa, this vintage exemplifies traditional winemaking fused with modern techniques. Hand-selected Grenache and Carignan grapes from steep, slate-rich vineyards undergo a careful fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, preserving the wine’s vibrant character. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, allowing subtle integration of oak nuances without overshadowing the fruit’s purity. The Pedres Blanques Rouge 2019 presents a deep garnet hue with complex aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, and a hint of mineral undertones. On the palate, it offers a full-bodied structure, silky tannins, and a lingering finish that reflects the unique terroir and the producer’s dedication to excellence. This exquisite wine is a testament to Pedres Blanques’ legacy of quality and passion for fine winemaking. |

Wine Advocate (97)The single-vineyard Cinsault 2021 Newk was named for musician Sonny Rollins Newk, for Parra, the wildest jazz musician of recent times. He says he finds the wine wild, full of energy and minerality. It was produced with grapes from an old vineyard in Guarilihue that is worked by horse, from vines planted on decomposed and rocky granite soils with some iron and a sandy and silty texture. It fermented with 100% full clusters after four or five days with native yeasts and a total maceration time of 55 days, then the wine matured in an oak vat for 11 months. It has 13.5% alcohol and is austere and sharp, mineral and stony. It's a bit reductive and opens up to notes of fresh blood and iodine, a little Gonon with that herbal side. The palate is phenomenal; it's deep and has grip and is mineral and intense with energy, direct and not shy. Superb. 1,537 bottles were filled in February 2022. This has a strong personality and feels very complete. |

It concludes with a spry, powdery and perfumed finish. This is a dramatically overperforming and serious expression of País. |

Wine Advocate (100)A deeper, richer version of the Cuvee Reservee, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is one of the more youthful, concentrated wines of the vintage. Coming primarily from the la Crau lieu-dit and over 90% Grenache, aged in an old foudre, its deep ruby color is followed by a bonafide smorgasbord of Provencal aromas and flavors of garrigue, cured meats, incense, beef blood, black currants and pepper. While a full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, rich and unctuous wine, it carries its wealth of fruit and mid-palate density with incredible elegance and purity, with a seamless texture, no hard edges and a finish that won't quit. The 2007 is more elegant and seamless than both the 1998 and 2003, with an incredible sweetness of tannin. Nevertheless, it still needs another 2-4 years of bottle age and will blow your mind over the following 10-15 years. |

Jeb Dunnuck (98+)The tiny production 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Da Capo is a powerhouse and unquestionably one of the top wines in the vintage. Compared to the 2010 by Laurence, it offers a stacked, full-bodied, incredibly concentrated feel as well as a blockbuster bouquet of blackcurrants, tapenade, cured meats, garrigue, and assorted Provençal street market-like aromas and flavors. It doesn’t have the sheer volume or flamboyant character of the 2016 (which I think is a better wine) but is deep, straight, and as classic as it gets. Hide bottles for 3-4 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy them over the following 2-3 decades. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)I was also able to taste the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Da Capo, which comes mostly from older vines in the La Crau lieu-dit and spends an additional year in a large foudre. The 2016 vintage was truly magical for the region, and this Cuvée Da Capo is unquestionably one of the finest vintages for this cuvée ever made, in the same league as, if not surpassing, the 1998, 2003, 2007, and 2010. Sensational notes of cured meats, crème de cassis, crushed violets, ground pepper, tapenade, truffle, and sweet herbes de Provence all soar from the glass and it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied style that stays seamless, weightless, and as pure as they come. Traditional, classic Châteauneuf Du Pape doesn’t get better. I hate to be the guy who throws out the “best to date” line very often, but this is truly magical stuff. |

Jeb Dunnuck (98)Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Da Capo is a bigger, richer wine, as well as a more youthful, focused, behemoth of a 2020. Powerful notes of ripe black cherries, darker currants, ground pepper, charcuterie, and flower incense are just some of the notions here, and it's full-bodied, with a concentrated, opulent mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't match the all-time greats of this estate, but it’s a more approachable, opulent, undeniable sexy, Provençal Da Cape that's impossible not to love. |

Wine Advocate (98)Starting off the reds and easily the best example of this cuvee since the 2001, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence is incredible stuff. Deep, rich and layered, with copious notions of smoked meats, licorice, ground pepper, spice and saddle leather, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, terrific fruit intensity and a rich, mouth-coating texture. Hard to resist now, it should nevertheless have two decades of longevity. Drink now-2029. |
