This was the first time I’ve tasted the 2020 Turpino cuvée from Maremma. (The first vintage was 2010.) A blend of Syrah and Cabernet Franc, with a small amount of Merlot from a vineyard four kilometers from the ocean, in the glass it pours a deep purple/magenta color and leads with layered sappy herbs followed by notes of crushed rosemary, lavender oil, blackberries, dark chocolate, and plum. Full-bodied, it saturates the palate with ripe, chalky tannins, even acidity, and a lovely, savory, ripe feel through the finish. It has the most depth and richness of these 2020s but also has fantastic savory notes of scrubby herbs throughout. It’s only going to improve over the next several years. Drink 2027-2050.Inc. This blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc owes much of its extraordinary quality to the impeccable perfectionist efforts of Quinault’s owners, Dr. Alain Raynaud and his wife, Francoise. The 37-acre vineyard, situated within the Libourne city limits, includes some of the appellation’s oldest vines. This wine enjoys all of the state of the art, cutting edge winemaking techniques (i.e., cold fermentation, malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees, and no fining or filtration). Yields are kept to a modest 40 hectoliters per hectare. The 2001 is a worthy rival to the 2000. Deep purple to the rim, this vibrant red boasts a gorgeous bouquet of striking minerality intermixed with raspberries, blackberries, and hints of blueberries, espresso roast, and oak. (14.5% alcohol): Bright, medium red-ruby. Cool aromas of crushed bluberry, bitter chocolate, scorched earth and licorice. Suave, smooth and fine-grained, with harmonious acidity framing and lifting the flavors of pungent red berries, tobacco and wild resiny herbs. Finishes with broad tannins and intriguing hints of herbs and earth. This property is now under the same LVMH ownership as Cheval Blanc and it shows in the wine's silky texture and medicinal reserve. A ripe, heady, blockbuster styled beauty, the 2015 Château Quinault l'Enclos (69% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) reveals a deep purple color as well as super ripe (but not overripe) notes of blackcurrants, Asian spices, cherries, and earth. With full-bodied richness, high, yet sweet tannin, and an incredible texture that seemed to improve every time I came back to the glass, it’s already beautifully but will keep for 15-20 years.Inc. The shape of this wine is really beginning to come into focus. It has great balance with precision and elegance. Pristine blue fruits and floral touches linger through the palate. There's a higher Cabernet content than usual here, as the replantings have come on line. Picking began on 10 September, making it among the earliest estates in St-Emilion. This early-ripening terroir also helped to avoid too many issues with mildew, because flowering was complete before it arrived. Consequently, the estate enjoyed a 40hl/ha yield. The 2018 Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 to 18 months, depending on which of two plots, in 90% new oak. It comes in at just 14.6% alcohol. More flavorful and aromatic than its sibling, the Touriga Franca, this is otherwise along the same lines. This Touriga Nacional maintains the Franca's mid-palate finesse, as well as the feeling it projects that it is the crushed essence of the grape. There's a little oak present, but not as much as you might think. This, too, will absorb the oak even better with a couple of years in the cellar, but the wood is very well handled. It is not really intrusive even now, and there is no "drenched in vanilla" demeanor at all. The tannins are very ripe, but with aeration this becomes much firmer on the finish, proving that it has the structure to age. Of all of Crasto's upper-level wines this report, it is probably this that most leans to hedonism, thanks to the aromatics and flavor, yet it is still very elegant and carefully crafted. It is never a sloppy fruit bomb. This succulent and enticing Touriga Nacional is impossible to resist, even today, but you will definitely be rewarded if you give it a few years of age to become more expressive. Finishes with broad tannins and intriguing hints of herbs and earth. This property is now under the same LVMH ownership as Cheval Blanc and it shows in the wine's silky texture and medicinal reserve. The shape of this wine is really beginning to come into focus. It has great balance with precision and elegance. Pristine blue fruits and floral touches linger through the palate. There's a higher Cabernet content than usual here, as the replantings have come on line. Picking began on 10 September, making it among the earliest estates in St-Emilion. This early-ripening terroir also helped to avoid too many issues with mildew, because flowering was complete before it arrived. Consequently, the estate enjoyed a 40hl/ha yield. The 2018 Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 to 18 months, depending on which of two plots, in 90% new oak. It comes in at just 14.6% alcohol. More flavorful and aromatic than its sibling, the Touriga Franca, this is otherwise along the same lines. This Touriga Nacional maintains the Franca's mid-palate finesse, as well as the feeling it projects that it is the crushed essence of the grape. There's a little oak present, but not as much as you might think. This, too, will absorb the oak even better with a couple of years in the cellar, but the wood is very well handled. It is not really intrusive even now, and there is no "drenched in vanilla" demeanor at all. The tannins are very ripe, but with aeration this becomes much firmer on the finish, proving that it has the structure to age. Of all of Crasto's upper-level wines this report, it is probably this that most leans to hedonism, thanks to the aromatics and flavor, yet it is still very elegant and carefully crafted. It is never a sloppy fruit bomb. This succulent and enticing Touriga Nacional is impossible to resist, even today, but you will definitely be rewarded if you give it a few years of age to become more expressive.
