Red berry, violet, forest floor, vanilla and balsamic aromas of menthol and camphor slowly appear on this stunning, radiant red along with whiffs of charcuterie. The vibrant, focused palate is young and taut but already impeccably balanced, evoking juicy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and cool mint framed in firm acidity and tightly knit but fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. It's already fantastic but will hold for even more complexity. Best 2026–2036.

The 2016 Soutard is a pretty wine with lovely freshness and energy. Blood orange and floral notes lift the red berry fruit nicely. Although attractive, the 2016 feels a bit narrow in construction. It would be nice to see a little more meat on the bones.

The 2019 Soutard is a heady, exuberant wine. Succulent black cherry, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice lend notable depth to this decidedly potent, full-bodied Saint-Émilion. All the elements come together so effortlessly. Soutard has really come together nicely with élevage. Its creamy, layered personality is super-impressive. There is a ton of intensity, but plenty of freshness, too.

Another gorgeous wine from this estate, the 2020 Château Soutard offers the fresh, pure, lively style of the vintage beautifully as well as offering ample red, blue, and black fruits, notes of graphite, crushed stone, and violets, seamless tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is elegance paired with power, and it's going to benefit from just 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20+. Bravo!

The 2021 Soutard unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and spices mingled with hints of violet and iris. Medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, it's deep and layered, with an impressively concentrated core of pure, vibrant fruit that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins and integrated acids. Transcending the vintage, this property's relentless upward trajectory continues.

I love this château, and the 2019 Château Soutard-Cadet is another brilliant wine that's in the same ballpark as the 2018. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as a rich, powerful nose of ripe black fruits, scorched earth, spicy oak, graphite, and damp earth, it's rich and concentrated, yet the purity is brilliant, it has silky and perfectly ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. As I wrote from barrel, it's going to benefit from just 2-4 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 20, 25, if not 30 years of overall longevity.

I was able to taste the 2021 Château Soutard-Cadet on multiple occasions and it never failed to impress. Red plums, subtle cassis, graphite, and a beautiful sense of minerality define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a vibrant, pure, focused mouthfeel, nicely integrated tannins, and a great finish. It clearly has the fresher, cooler style of the vintage yet this has density and depth. It's a gorgeous wine that will benefit from just a few years in the cellar and keep for 15+ if well stored. The blend is 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, raised in 70% new barrels (225- and 500-liter.)

The Spear Sta. Rita Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir 2019 epitomises the elegance and complexity characteristic of this esteemed varietal. Cultivated in the pristine terroir of the Sta. Rita Hills, California, this Pinot Noir benefits from the region’s cool maritime climate and limestone-rich soils, which impart a distinct minerality and vibrant acidity. Hand-harvested grapes are meticulously sorted before undergoing fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve their delicate aromatics. The wine is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, allowing subtle integration of vanilla and spice nuances without overpowering the fruit-forward profile. Produced by Spear Wines, renowned for their commitment to sustainable viticulture and artisanal winemaking, the 2019 vintage showcases layers of red cherry, raspberry, and hints of earthy undertones, culminating in a silky finish. This exceptional Pinot Noir is a testament to Spear’s dedication to quality and the unique expression of the Sta. Rita Hills estate.

Vinous (93)

The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Sant'Urbano is dusty and darkly alluring, as dried flowers and incense gives way to nuances of cocoa and, with time in the glass, a vivid note of black cherry. This is texturally deep and savory in style, coming across as almost salty in character, with an intense and saturating core of raspberry and cherry. Exotic spices, dark, dark chocolate and clove develop toward the close. This tapers off long and staining, lightly structured, needing only a short stay in the cellar to come together. Speri did a remarkable job of maintaining balance in such a warm and difficult vintage.

Savour the indulgent taste of Speri Recioto della Valpolicella La Roggia 2018, a prestigious vintage from the steep Valpolicella hills of northern Italy. This finely-crafted delight is the product of Speri, a renowned family winery with over seven generations of wine-making mastery. Speri is highly esteemed in Italy and globally for preserving traditional viticulture whilst focusing on quality over quantity.

The Speri Recioto della Valpolicella La Roggia 2018 imparts an enchanting full-bodied sweetness, underpinned by lush notes of marasca cherry and blackberry preserves. The artisan flavours are courtesy of the noble Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara berries, carefully sun-dried on bamboo racks for four months. This meticulous process intensifies the sugars and aromatic properties. Subsequently, the grapes undergo a painstakingly slow fermentation to maintain the rich fruity flavour. The wine, aged in Slovenian oak barrels for two years, bestows a remarkable elegance and velvety finish.

My favorite in the blind-tasted lineup extending from 2010 through 2020 was the opulent yet concentrated and impeccably structured 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon. It boasts classic scents of cherries and cassis on the nose, with touches of vanilla and wood spice adding nuance on the medium to full-bodied palate. Imbued with tremendous intensity, the supple tannins and ripe acids necessary for aging and a long, complex finish, this wine truly has it all.
