2016	Argentiera Bolgheri Superiore 2016 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97) The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Argentiera is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, and the Cabernet Sauvignon logically feels and tastes most prominent. This is a dark and penetrating Tuscan red that is beautifully elevated, thanks to the extremely elegant and buoyant quality of the aromas. They lift gracefully from the glass with light-footed, almost fleeting character. However, don't underestimate the power and the concentration of the wine, because this vintage delivers both with abundance. I've had my eye on this estate since the vineyards were first planted some 20 years ago, and there is no doubt that this vintage brings Tenuta Argentiera into a new era as a Bolgheri protagonist. 2014	(Maison) Louis Jadot Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (92-93) The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which comes from three sources, is a little more savory on the nose compared to the Clos Saint Denis, perhaps sans the same level of purity. There is more tertiary notes here, a hint of bacon fat even. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly broader tannin than the Clos Saint Denis that lends it the weight, the presence, albeit without the nervosité or the mineral core expressed by the Clos Saint Denis. Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault 2017 (6x75cl) Decanter (95) An utterly delicious Cinsault from Swartland pioneer and champion of the Cinsault revival in South Africa, Andre Adrian (Adi) Badenhorst. The Ramnasgras comes from a small vineyard on the estate, planted in the mid 50’s, and is the product of meticulous hand selection, fermentation in ‘dodgy old wooden vats’ and maturation in ‘less dodgy foudre for 12 months’. Such is Adi’s way, the wine is made with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery and is a true reflection of the vintage conditions and Swartland terroir. This is full of red berries and perfumed floral notes with a mineral edge. 2010	Alain Voge Cornas Les Vieilles Fontaines 2010 (1x150cl) Wine Advocate (100) Even better than the 2012 - and one of the greatest Cornas I've ever tasted - the 2010 Cornas Vieilles Fontaines comes from a tiny plot of old vines and granite soils named after the fountain located near the vines. Sensationally concentrated, powerful, backward and tasting like the essence of these steep granite slopes, it gives up loads of cassis, freshly crushed rock, wood smoke, black raspberry and roasted meats.This full-bodied beauty is as profound as they come, yet needs 4-5 years of cellaring and will keep for 20-30 years. Robert Parker rated this beauty 100 points on release and I can only agree with him. 2017	Alain Voge Cornas VV 2017 (6x75cl) Decanter (96) Vines with an average age of 60 years from lieux-dits Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards and Chaillot provide the fruit for this Cornas. It spends 20 months in barriques, around 20% new. There are multiple layers to the aromatic palate: rosemary, thyme, herbal bitters, blackberry, blackcurrant and loganberry. A medium-bodied, concentrated but unforced wine with no excessive extraction, a subtly spiced finish and sinewy, brushed tannins. It has a clean, fresh and vibrant bouquet with red cherry, cranberry leaf and fine mineralité coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, impressive depth, quite saline in the mouth with a pinch of spice/black pepper toward the finish. I appreciate the nose here: very well defined, nicely focused, a mixture of red and black fruit, a little conservative and straightlaced like Latricières should be. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and crisp acidity, harmonious and poised with a really classy and sophisticated finish that is a joy. One of the best from Albert Bichot this year. Medium in body and constantly changing in the glass, the Capalot captures all of the complexities that make Nebbiolo and Barolo so fascinating. The wine opens to a luminous golden color with balanced fruit and spice aromas that are expertly folded together. This vintage is especially bright and polished, especially in terms of mouthfeel. Honey and quince flood the very long and silky finish. Grapes are harvested from vines that range from 22 to 72 years in age. The grapes are fermented in barrique with ambient yeasts and aged on the fine lees in oak for 11 months. Some 50,700 of various format bottles are produced. Sensationally concentrated, powerful, backward and tasting like the essence of these steep granite slopes, it gives up loads of cassis, freshly crushed rock, wood smoke, black raspberry and roasted meats.This full-bodied beauty is as profound as they come, yet needs 4-5 years of cellaring and will keep for 20-30 years. Robert Parker rated this beauty 100 points on release and I can only agree with him. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and crisp acidity, harmonious and poised with a really classy and sophisticated finish that is a joy. One of the best from Albert Bichot this year. The wine opens to a luminous golden color with balanced fruit and spice aromas that are expertly folded together. This vintage is especially bright and polished, especially in terms of mouthfeel. Honey and quince flood the very long and silky finish. Grapes are harvested from vines that range from 22 to 72 years in age. The grapes are fermented in barrique with ambient yeasts and aged on the fine lees in oak for 11 months. Some 50,700 of various format bottles are produced.
