The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a concentrated bouquet with yellow fruit, orange rind and light crushed stone. It coalesces nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, lightly spiced with fine grip, tensile, even a little mean on the finish. Wonderful salinity. Superb. The 2019 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a clean, precise, more floral bouquet than the Valmur; white flower petal scents infuse the citrus fruit, along with a hint of egg whites. The palate is well balanced, taut and linear, with great poise and nervosité, leading to an intense and very persistent finish. This will vie with the Valmur as best Grand Cru.

Christian and Fabien own an enviable three hectares that extend two-thirds of the way up the slope. This 2020 is almost cozy with concentrated extract at the core. This generous body is smartly lifted by vivid acidity. The flavors range from citrus and star fruit to roasted hazelnuts and a hint of smoke. 2024-40

A glowing lemon and lime colour, really delicious. Immaculate precision on the nose, as steely as they come. Excellent tension, the purest of white fruits, just a little cream behind which is a sign of concentration, supported in this case by really well-judged oak. Huge ageing potential. The 2020 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a well-defined nose, citrus fruit mixed with pear, wet limestone and green apples, tight at first but responds to aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and fresh with a lovely, lip-smacking salinity that fires up the finish. Excellent.

The 2020 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru has a backward bouquet that demands coaxing from the glass: wet pavement, pressed yellow flowers and a touch of flint. Very focused. Fresh and saline, the palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity; however, it remains quite strict and oddly like a 2021 towards the close. Give this three or four years in bottle.

Extremely aromatic with crushed berries, currants, flowers and hints of uncured tobacco leaf. Carnations. Medium to full body and extremely fine tannins that are firm and polished. Vertical tannins draw you down. Some blanched-walnut character to the blue fruit. Fresh and clean at the finish. Release in spring 2020. So beautiful to drink now.

For lovers of powerful, massive Côte Rôtie, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Brocarde from Billon is going to punch that ticket. Decadent black fruits, scorched earth, roasted meats, and spicy nuances all define this beauty, and it's full-bodied, with a decadent, layered texture, one heck of a great mid-palate, and the density, structure, and balance to benefit from 7-8 years of bottle age and evolve for 20-30 years.

Like the other wines I tasted from Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona this year, I am surprised by the soft ripeness achieved in the 2014 Brunello di Montalcino. This was a cool and soggy vintage so those dark and sweet fruit flavors are counterintuitive. However, they elevate the wine to a higher intensity threshold and a more profound flavor profile. The wine offers enough crisp acidity and tannic firmness to hold it tightly together at this young stage in its lifespan. Some 60,000 bottles were released.

At the top of the pyramid is the 2005 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.

The palate is concentrated with a slight prune character and has very crisp acidity. At this stage the phenolics are showing a little chewy before finishing long. Drink it now to 2027+.

The 2016 Anjou Violette is deep, intense, very pure and elegant on the harmonious nose, with perfectly ripe dark and red berry aromas (blackcurrant) intertwined with floral aromas. Silky, finessed and fresh on the palate, this is a very delicate and charming blend of Cab Franc (two-thirds 45-year-old vines) and Cab Sauvignon (one-third 65-year-old vines) with perfectly ripe, concentrated but juicy fruit, a velvety and concentrated texture, very fine and crunchy tannins and enormous intensity, thanks to the low-yielding Cabernets. This is a beautifully finessed and silky-textured Anjou that reveals its concentration and depth only on the finish. The wine was aged in barrels for 18 months and then spent another six months in vat. Bottled in April 2017.

Situated just 500 meters from plot 469, this single vineyard (only 45 acres) benefits from having its vines planted in very shallow limestone soils complemented by a highly ventilated climate. So, the 2022 Sancerre Monoparcelle 538 reveals a pure, deep bouquet of ripe orchard fruits, an elegant reduction of oak, spices and citrus mingled with iodine-inflected, menthol notes. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it’s round and charming with a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids, chalky dry extracts and a long, saline, ethereal finish. This is a superb rendition of this soil. Matured 18 months in foudres or wooden tanks.
