Burghound (97)Don't miss! An overtly floral-suffused nose speaks of the ripe essence of white peach, passion fruit, anise, exotic Asian-style tea and in particularly jasmine, tangerine rind and a hint of wood influence. There is exceptionally good density to the palate staining big-bodied flavors that exhibit impressive power on the muscular and overtly mineral-driven finale which offers massive length on the ever-so-slightly warm finale. This very serious effort is a classic Chevalier of class and grace and it's also a wine that I could still taste 24 hours later. It will be hard to find but worth it as this is one of the wines of the vintage. In a word, brilliant. 2032+ |

Vinous (89)The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is quite deep in colour. It has a slightly reduced bouquet with ample blackberry and raspberry fruit, well integrated oak, though it is missing the Pinoté character I look for. Vinous (90)First harvested in 2014, this 10,000-vine plot was created by basically exploding large blocks of flint with dynamite to obtain a flint-rich vineyard full of large rocks. The result is a creamy, silken 2019 Pouilly-Fumé Barre à Mine that is welcoming; flavor-wise, it's all ground almonds and oyster shell with masses of acidity. There's a firmness on the finish due to the flinty soils, providing upright structure and freshness, but once again, as with other 2019s, the alcohol gets in the way of the finish. An appetizing yet structured wine. |

Vinous (93)Produced from a flint site that needed to be blown up to make the terroir and made from relatively young vines, this is initially a tender and supple style with a whiff of gunsmoke/flint, a taut line of precision that runs through its core, a mere hint of green herbs reminding you that Pouilly is a Sauvignon producer and even a hint of white pepper. It's a powerful style that has an attractive sense of bitterness holding it together. At just 13%, this is wonderfully balanced, aromatic and driven in this vintage. You may even feel this sense of spice that warms the palate, almost like you've had a warming Indian curry - it's not the alcohol but something else - maybe it's the lint. Unique and intriguing. |

Vinous (96)The 2022 Stars in the Dark comes from Cape Agulhas, stomped underfoot with one-third whole bunches, aged in 3rd and 4th fill French oak. The red fruit on the nose seems to "hug" the olfactory senses, very pure and beautifully delineated, an underlying mineralité gaining momentum with aeration. Halliday Wine Companion (94)Sourced from the proprietary Lopresti vineyard, known as the 'Chinese Block'. Near Wilunga, this is a warmer zone. Hand picked and placed in drying crates to undergo appassimento; this elevates tannins while concentrating fruit in a shift of the phenolic makeup, imparting a firm, ferrous savouriness. Wine Advocate (92)Once you taste a few of a producer's wines side by side, you really start to get a feel for stylistic preference between warm vintages and cool ones. I surprise myself by saying here that I prefer the warmer vintages at Mollydooker (this does not make it right) because the sunshine and ease with which ripening can occur in a warmer year really seems to suit the plush, high-octane style being proliferated here. So, this 2021 Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz is far more on the blue fruit spectrum than the 2020, which has a complex array of sweet/savory/spice characters. The detail here errs to blackberry, blood plum and resin—a spicy, full-bodied Shiraz. Not for the faint of heart. |

Wine Advocate (94)Mollydooker's 2018 Carnival of Love Shiraz is more red-fruited and structured than I expected, given the wine's stated 16% alcohol. Raspberries and cedar mark the nose, with hints of chocolate, espresso and baking spices. In the mouth, it's full-bodied, dense and powerful, with ripe but firm tannins supporting the bright berry flavors, then easing into a long, velvety and mouthwatering finish. It should drink well for around a decade, but if you're shy of tannins, you may want to wait another year or two before opening. |

Vinous (90)The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is an attractive mid-weight wine. Dark red/cherry plum fruit, mocha, leather, spice and incense all grace this supple, silky Barolo. There's lovely creaminess and plenty of allure in this tasty Barolo from Michele Chiarlo. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Lean and fragrant, very slightly meaty in a light-touch way, rooibos tea, fynbos, biltong, nectarine skin. A slightly crazy collision of flavours but it works. And then, in the mouth, held, the spices begin to build. Fine spice. The tannins hum with spice. It tastes like rain and it tastes like red apples and it tastes a little like a lick of rust and its savoury with driftwood tannins. Ultra-elegant. The tannins fill my mouth like a suspension bridge in the mist. This Sam Lambson makes wine … VGV |

The medium-bodied palate has fine-grained tannins, extremely well-balanced with a precise, edgy finish, black pepper and black tea lingering temptingly. This continues Lambson's strong run of form and comes highly recommended. |

Unabashedly big, yet far from jammy, as a welcome result. Asian spice, blood stone, bitter amaro and cherry pith, with a verdant echo of cabernet in the background. |
