Alvaro Palacios Priorat L'Ermita 2016 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97-100)

As I saw in some of the other wines, there is a lot more Cariñena in the still unbottled 2016 L'Ermita than in the 2015. The varietal breakdown was approximately 85% Garnacha, 14% Cariñena and 1% white grapes—Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and PX. The grapes are manually sorted and destemmed by the team that picks them and are put to ferment in an oak vat with the natural yeasts from the grapes. Malolactic was in barrique, which is where the wine was maturing when I tasted it. It has electric acidity that makes it vibrant, even if the nose might be a bit shy. I don't remember a vintage of L'Ermita with this concentration and acidity. We have to see how the élevage rounds it out, but this could be a very important vintage for L'Ermita. The expectation is to bottle some 2,000 bottles of this in May/June 2018.

Alvaro Palacios Priorat L'Ermita 2018 (3x75cl) Wow. This has to be one of the most incredible L’Ermitas I have ever tasted. It has a lifted, mineral, angelic nose yet the concentration, the power in this wine is truly sensational. Fresh and clean and just so pure, it is enveloped with intense red and black berry fruit. The minerality cuts through with seamless, focused, precise, heavenly finesse. That combination of intensity and concentration with purity and minerality is simply stunning. Energy exudes from every drop and this is linear, like an arrow, and exceptionally fine. The tannins are smooth and silky, gliding on the palate whilst the vapour lingers on and on. This is a divine, absolutely incredible L’Ermita. Drink 2034-2055.

The impressive 1927 Pedro Ximenez Solera, from a Solera begun nearly 80 years ago, boasts a dark amber color as well as an extraordinary nose of creme brulee, liquefied nuts, marmalade, and maple syrup. Angelus 2017 (6x75cl)

Decanter (96)

Emmanuelle has been making wine here for 22 years now. The freshness of the Merlot in 2017 reminds her of 2001 - I would certainly agree, and maybe with a hint of 2014 too. It's a beautiful wine, voluptuous but elegant. These vines were not frosted, but the Cabernet Franc produced less than usual, and they also made an extremely careful selection overall, leading to a yield of 30hl/ha. The wine has great complexity, which is a standout character in 2017, with bilberries, charcoal and plush damson - the Angelus signature of power and glamour. There is good tannic density here and it will clearly merit long ageing. 85,000 bottles of Angelus produced, representing around 80% of total production. Matured in 100% new oak.

Angelus 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97-100)

The 2018 Angélus is blended of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, to be aged 18-22 months in barriques, 100% new, plus two new foudres. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slips slowly, sensuously out of the glass with beautiful black raspberries, kirsch, warm plums and red roses scents, building in intensity to reveal chocolate-covered cherries, raspberry coulis, black tea, woodsmoke and powdered cinnamon notions with a waft of black olives and charcuterie. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a wonderfully profound, multilayered, seamless experience of red and black fruits intertwined with earth, spice and floral notions and framed by exquisitely ripe, satiny tannins, finishing with amazing freshness and length. Incredibly, finely, expertly, seamlessly knit. Stunning.

Antinori (Guado Tasso) Matarocchio 2011 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

I was blown away by the 2011 Matarocchio (100% Cabernet Franc). From 15-year-old vines planted some 60 meters above sea level on the Tuscan coast, this wine is absolutely stunning, delicious and simply unforgettable. Only produced in 2007, 2009 and 2011, this third edition shows towering aromas of sensuous dark fruit, leather and tobacco. If Cabernet Franc is the darling grape of this appellation, Matarocchio is a reason why. The mouthfeel is penetrating and powerful, but seamless and silky smooth at the same time. The tannin management is excellent. This is one to keep in the cellar.

Vinous (93)

The 2016 Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino from Antinori is dark and rich, displaying notes of brown spice, mocha and tobacco, before giving way to musky black cherries and sage. Its cooling, creamy textures usher in a dense wave of ripe red and hints of black fruit, with salty minerals and fine-grained tannins providing grip. Licorice and violets resonate, along with inner earth tones throughout the long and structured finish. The Pian delle Vigne will require many years of cellaring to show its best, but it is well worth the wait.

Antinori Guado Al Tasso 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Guado Al Tasso is another star performer from a vintage that was tailor-made by some higher being specifically for the blended red wines of Tuscany. This mix of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot slides seamlessly right in there with our highest expectations of the iconic vintage. The wine offers beautiful intensity and purity, yet it also delivers balanced power and lasting persistence. This is a baritone expression from Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast with impenetrable black fruit, chocolate and tobacco followed by rich concentration and tightly knit texture. I tasted this wine next to a barrel sample of the unfinished 2016 vintage. This vintage appears more exuberant and opulent at this early stage. Some 120,000 bottles were made.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes comes from two parcels, the lower one touched by frost, so that the production is a modest 15% down. It has a pleasant reduction on the nose, well defined however, with good intensity. The palate is very well balanced and is bestowed the richness one expects from this vineyard, counterbalanced by a saline thread that governs the second half. An interesting wine predestined for aging, this is one of the best wines from Antoine Jobard in 2016.

Angelus 2016 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (99)

Subtle and profound aromas of blackberries, wet earth and sweet tobacco. Hints of spice, too. Full-bodied and so deep. It’s incredibly vertical and long. Just like looking down a well. Firm and powerful tannins, yet polished and balanced. Goes on for minutes. One of the greatest ever. Try after 2025.

This is a wonderful pure sangiovese with wet earth, mushrooms, pine and cedar with black cherries. Full body. Dense and layered with ripe tannins, yet there’s vivid and energetic acidity. It drives to the end and pulls you in. Top stuff. Drink or hold.

Antinori Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne 2016 (6x75cl)

The usual outstanding white, with an intense lemon curd and pineapple character and hints of creme brulee and vanilla. It's dense and powerful, with loads of fruit, yet the acidity corsets the voluptuous form of the wine. An opulent and delicious wine that will improve with age. Drink or hold.

A full-bodied white with complex aromas of hawthorn, ripe peach, apricot, mango, lime, flint, toast and some smoke. Layered, concentrated and persistent with bright acidity and a firm, phenolic texture. Hint of vanilla. Very long and refined. Beautiful as always. Very approachable, but better from 2022.

This is a very sleek and racy wine with lots of stone, white-pepper and fresh-rosemary character. Then it takes off with dried ripe fruits such as currants and blueberries. Dark chocolate, too. This a real mouthful yet remains agile and powerful. Linear and long finish. Great precision. Best ever from Guado al Tasso?

Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes comes from two parcels, the lower one touched by frost, so that the production is a modest 15% down. It has a pleasant reduction on the nose, well defined however, with good intensity. The palate is very well balanced and is bestowed the richness one expects from this vineyard, counterbalanced by a saline thread that governs the second half. An interesting wine predestined for aging, this is one of the best wines from Antoine Jobard in 2016.

The palate is smooth on the entry with supple red berry fruit laced with bay leaf and clove, leading to a very composed finish that seems more elegant and refined than previous vintages. Bon vin!
