Vinous - Antonio Galloni (99)
The 2015 Promontory is just as magnificent as it has always been. Tasted next to current releases, the 2015 shows the riper style of the year, and also a bit more oak influence from the new casks the estate was moving to during this era. Dark-hued fruit, graphite, leather, dried herbs, lavender and a touch of oak open with a bit of coaxing. More than anything else, I am so impressed with the quality of the tannins, by far the biggest challenge the Harlan family faced in the early days of making wines from this rugged hillside site. If I think back to the 2008, the first vintage here, and wines I tasted prior to release, the progress made at Promontory in under a decade is nothing short of remarkable.Inc. VAT£2,542.19 -
The Wine Independent (100)
Deep purple-black colored, the nose of the 2016 Promontory starts a little sluggish and broody before positively erupting with powerful scents of plum preserves and crème de cassis, followed by exotic hints of cardamom, Indian spices, and sandalwood, plus wafts of fertile loam and crushed rocks. The palate is full-bodied, rich, and velvety, intertwining opulence and minerality with wonderful vibrancy and gravitas, finishing with an epically long-lasting array of earthy sparks. Now starting to shut down as it heads into a slumber, give it a good 4-5 more years in the cellar before broaching, then drink it over the next 30+ years.Inc. VAT£2,292.40 -

Packed full of vivid (there really doesn't seem any other word for it) cassis and blueberry fruits, floral, textural and nuanced. Cabernet Sauvignon signature mix of crushed rocks, mint, crayon and slate, just a brilliant wine and a reflection of its exceptional site. This is elegant and precise while still delivering muscular, powerful flavours. I first tasted it at the property last November, and it's reassuring to see it make exactly the same impression when retasted back in Bordeaux, away from the awe-inspiring landscape. Harvest September 10 through to October 23. David Cilli winemaker, director Will Harlan.Inc. VAT£1,007.60 -

The 2019 Promontory has a deep garnet-purple color. It is quite closed at the moment, needing a little swirling to reveal notes of crushed rocks, garrigue, iron ore, and lavender, leading to a core of black cherries, redcurrant jelly, and fresh blackcurrants, with a hint of mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is so tightly wound, delivering multi-layered black and red berries with mineral and earthy sparks, supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant.Inc. (Napa Valley; 100% Cabernet Sauvignon; 13.5% alcohol). Utterly beguiling. Gracious, calm, relaxed, composed, a little introvert and reticent but exuding class and balance and harmony even in its slight introspectiveness. Delightfully subtle. The delicate floral notes are the first to show – peony and lilac. Then the fruits. Cassis. Blueberries. And there’s a lovely slight stalky leafiness that really brings out the character of the Cabernet. So gracious. So utterly beautiful. Exquisitely balanced. There’s a diaphanous sheen and gloss to this that is so beguiling and it is so much less demonstrative in its intensity and concentration than any other Napa wine. I’m in raptures. Note the low alcohol. This was picked early – so early in fact that the forest fires had yet to begin.Inc. VAT£2,980.76 -

The 2022 Cuvée Aux Antipodes Blanc is a magnificent triumph of yields. Where previously this 1.8-hectare plot produced anywhere from six to eight barrels of wine, the 2022 produced 23 barrels of wine—very exciting for followers of this cuvée. On the nose, the wine is showing its youth, but far from being inchoate, it is long and polished through the very long finish. It's got lashings of stone fruit and preserved citrus, white pepper, star anise, shaved fennel, juniper and cold buttered toast. This is a wonderful wine of potential and kaleidoscopic complexity, although it is far tighter and more compact than previous years. Searingly good. This was an unlabeled bottle pre-release. 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam.Inc. VAT£382.69 -

The 2021 Cuvee aux Antipodes Pinot Noir is scheduled for release in 2025 (although, should you be able to get your hands on some now and wish to drink it, it is already looking so good). On the nose, the wine is fresh and so detailed, with spiced cherry, tapenade, dried herbs, hints of alpine mint, red apple skins and black tea. In the mouth, the wine is balanced and exciting, herbal and fresh, with layers of texture and flavor that are difficult to separate. This is first rate, a thrilling wine, powerful and long but nuanced. Sealed under Diam.Inc. VAT£747.12 -

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of currant, mocha, truffle and smoke. Fat and plump but with only moderate cut to the sweet flavors of red fruits, truffle and smoke. Offers plenty of sex appeal and a high-pH mouth feel but could use a bit more energy (I would never have picked this blind as a wine from the Moueix stable). Finishes with substantial dusty tannins.Inc. VAT£571.24 -

This limited-production, 100% Merlot cuvee is a beauty. Sweet, almost caramelized black cherry fruit and dark mountain berries intermixed with forest floor and a touch of subtle oak characterize this full-bodied, rich, concentrated, superb Pomerol that should hit its stride in 3-4 years and last for two decades. Unfortunately, the production is only about 1,500 cases.Inc. VAT£403.55 -
Immerse yourself in the exquisite world of Burgundian wines by savouring the Prunier-Damy Auxey-Duresses Les Boutonniers 2022. Proudly crafted by Prunier-Damy, a revered family-owned domaine located in the serene village of Auxey-Duresses; this mesmerising white wine is a testament to their dedication, passion, and expertise passed down through generations. This wine sources its fruit exclusively from a five-hectare site with local Tortoniano soils that are rich in magnesium and manganese with a bluish hue. The Prunotto 2021 Barbaresco Bric Turot (with 26,000 bottles made) shows an expressive savory side that to my tastes translates as more roots than flowers. Dark fruit is followed by tilled earth, petrichor and toasted almond husk. This is a keeper, but for near and medium-term drinking, I would go with the village Barbaresco.Inc. VAT£274.40 -

The Prunotto 2020 Barolo Bussia is very light and luminous in appearance with shiny ruby highlights. There is a note of sweet cherry, even candied cherry, that appears on the bouquet and just as intensely on the mid-palate. Bussia offers delicate fruit in this rendition without the extra brawn and muscle that is most often associated with this site. Instead, this expression focuses in on finesse and silkiness. Fruit comes from across eight hectares in Bussia, and 32,000 bottles were created as a result.Inc. VAT£420.80 -

The 2012 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is an intriguing wine. Whole clusters add an exotic element of perfume to the Nebbiolo fruit in this expressive, highly nuanced Barolo. (6x75cl) 2014Vinous (94)
The 2014 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is an eccentric wine. Soaring floral and savory nuances give the 2014 an incredibly distinctive upper register. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2014 nevertheless has plenty of depth as well as freshness. Appreciating it requires a palate reset, as vinificaton with whole clusters (50%) is not common in Barolo. The 2014 is an incredibly intriguing wine, but it needs to really be taken on its own terms because it is undeniably quirky. A few hours of aeration works wonders in helping the wine come together and assimilate the strong stem character that is so pronounced upon first opening.Inc. VAT£838.84 -
Vinous (93+)
The 2015 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is a wild, eccentric wine. The use of whole clusters lends quite a bit of savory intensity. Sage, tobacco, holiday spicecake, cedar, blood orange and macerated cherry all develop with a bit of aeration. The tannins just need to soften. If they do this could be a very intriguing wine, but slight hints of oxidation make it hard to understand the direction the 2017 is headed in.
