Darker currants, chocolaty oak, cigar tobacco, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a great finish. • Rocca di Frassinello Baffonero 2015 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2015 Baffonero, the estate's 100% Merlot, is classy and polished from start to finish. Chocolate, plum and leather appear first, followed by beautifully lifted scents of star anise, white chocolate, orange peel and spice. Stylistically, the 2015 is quite a bit more restrained than most prior vintages. It will be interesting to see if that is reflection of the year or representative of where the wine will goi in coming vintages.
  • Rocca di Frassinello Baffonero 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2016 Baffonero (100% Merlot) is a polished, elegant wine that also avoids some of the excesses of previous years. In 2016, Baffonero is perfumed and light on its feet. All it needs is a bit more persistence through to the finish. Perhaps that will develop with time in bottle. Today, the 2016 impresses for its balance and sense of poise. This is a very pretty Baffonero.

  • Rocca di Frassinello Baffonero 2018 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2018 Baffonero is a worthy follow up to the 2017. Whereas so many 2018s lean towards the more gracious end of the spectrum, Baffonero packs quite a punch, albeit in the slightly more restrained style of the year. Inky, exotically ripe dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, new leather and lavender all build as this exuberant, Maremma red shows off its undeniable allure. Baffonero, 100% Merlot, emerges from a 3.5 hectares planted in 1999, which have recently been supplanted by another hectare or so of vineyards. In 2018, a cool growing season without excessive heat, rare in this part of Tuscany, resulted in a long growing cycle. There was some rain early on, especially during flowering, but that, along with moderate temperatures, helped the vines from going into heat stress, which is always the risk on the Tuscan coast. Harvest for the Merlot was about ten days later than normal. The 2018 was vinified in cement, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aging was 18-20 months in French oak, about 80% new.

  • Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

The 2015 Chianti Classico is gorgeous. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and leather are nicely pushed forward in this attractive, supple Chianti Classico. The ripeness of the year comes through nicely, but without distorting the wine's very classic, midweight feel. Although quite ripe, the 2015 retains striking minerality and salinity.
  • Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2021 (6x75cl)

    Decanter (93)

As high temperatures in mid-August shut down the ripening of Sangiovese, Marco Ricasoli reports picking approximately a week later than usual. He also introduced a sorting table to remove dried or green berries as well any pieces of stems. His resulting annata is pristine and sophisticated. Deep violet in colour and equally youthful on the nose, it exudes wild berries, black plum, and hints of wood spice. Tangy dark red cherry fills the mouth, buoyed by rambunctious acidity and framed by suede-textured tannins. Winter mint and liquorice root linger on the finish. With admirable complexity, this outperforms its category.

  • Rocca di Montegrossi Ridolfo 2015 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98)

The 2015 Ridolfo is still a very young wine, even from a standard 750ml bottle (the commercial release is only in magnum). Blood orange, spice, star anise, dried herbs and pomegranate lend notable freshness and complexity. This vivid red is so beautiful, so expressive. With a bit of air, the 2015 can be enjoyed now, although I would prefer to wait.
