The 2021 Chardonnay Eola Springs is the first commercial release of Chardonnay from Rose & Arrow. “We acquired this vineyard a few years ago,” winemaker Felipe Ramirez says of the west-facing, higher elevation, rocky site in the Eola-Amity Hills. “This is the first time we feel that we have the quality that can compete with the quality of our Pinot Noirs,” he continues. The wine was barrel fermented and underwent full malolactic conversion. It was matured for 11 months in oak and an additional seven months in stainless steel. The nose offers well-integrated matchstick scents that complement a core of yellow apple, beeswax and toast. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with concentrated tree fruit flavors. Very good full red. Pure but subdued aromas of cherry and licorice; much more reserved than the Latricieres. Conveys an impression of tightly coiled minerality and energy but this is rather inexpressive today in spite of its vibrancy. Finishes tight and discreet. The Rossignols' parcel of vines in the Gemeaux section of this cru produces a wine with more interior force wine, says David Rossignol, but it needs time. Finishes juicy and discreet.Inc. Made with 50% whole bunches in 2012, this has notes of pepper and clove spice on the nose and palate. The wine was picked earlier and shows charming red fruits that complement the savoury undertones.Inc. VAT£1,257.20 -
Vinous (89-92)
Good full red. Darker but less perfumed on the nose than the Latricières, offering aromas of black raspberry and licorice complicated by smoke and cocoa powder and perked up by peppery spices. Silky-sweet in the mouth; clearly the plushest and densest of these 2014s to this point. There's more mid-palate stuffing here to support the slightly dusty, late-arriving tannins. This is always a dense wine, notes David Rossignol--closer to Chambertin in style than to Griottes, for example.Inc. VAT£149.33 -

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly bricking hue, presumably due to whole bunch addition. The nose delivers on that, overtly stemmy to the point that it masks the red berry fruit and used tea leaf scents behind it. Thankfully, they do seem to be assimilated with aeration. The 2018 Pinot Noir Stonecreek reveals a concentrated nose of licorice, black cherry, and dried flowers followed by a refined palate that delivers ripe structure without feeling heavy. It is energetic and concentrated, with incredibly persistent drive, and is noted by black raspberry liqueur, fresh leather, mocha, and layered spice. It feels polished yet weightless. Its textural breadth is balanced by vibrant acidity, and it has a long, honeyed finish. 126 cases were made.In Bond£1,291.00 -

Finishes juicy and discreet. In Bond£2,264.00 -

Made with 50% whole bunches in 2012, this has notes of pepper and clove spice on the nose and palate. There's plenty of sweet vanilla oak too, with chalky minerality and a hint of reduction on the palate. The wine was picked earlier and shows charming red fruits that complement the savoury undertones. In Bond£1,027.00 -
Vinous (89-92)
Good full red. Darker but less perfumed on the nose than the Latricières, offering aromas of black raspberry and licorice complicated by smoke and cocoa powder and perked up by peppery spices. Silky-sweet in the mouth; clearly the plushest and densest of these 2014s to this point. There's more mid-palate stuffing here to support the slightly dusty, late-arriving tannins. This is always a dense wine, notes David Rossignol--closer to Chambertin in style than to Griottes, for example. In Bond£121.00 -

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two plots, apparently from 2019 the domaine plans two separate cuvées, one from the lieu-dit of Les Gemeaux. It has an understated, beautifully defined bouquet that gradually unfurls in the glass: brambly red berry fruit, autumn leaves and hints of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is born with a pitch perfect line of acidity that imparts an engaging sense of harmony, very pure with a dash of spice on the finish. Superb. In Bond£129.00 -

The 2018 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more feminine and elegant bouquet than the Latricières, offering pure red berry fruit, pressed rose petals and light sous-bois notes, all very precise. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a superb line of acidity, good cohesion and more precision than the Latricières toward the wonderfully persistent finish. This should age with style. In Bond£841.00 -

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, again quite stemmy and brittle. There is plenty of freshness here but if you don't like whole cluster Burgundy, avoid.
