(6x75cl) 1996Jeb Dunnuck (100)
A stunning wine through and through, the 1996 Champagne Salon is one for the ages. Tasted at 28 years old in August 2024, it felt youthful and pristine. The house's stylistic focus is fully resonant yet has so much life yet to give, retaining a calling card of compact tension and nerve. On opening, it poured a medium straw hue, hardly suggesting its age, and revealed aromatics of crushed seashells, lemon confit, crystalline salted caramel, and poached apples. The palate sets this wine apart, its mousse highly refined yet lively, with buoyant acidity and chalky richness expanding through the extraordinarily long finish. A profound bottle and a profound wine. If you happen to own or come across a bottle stored well, I would venture to guess it has another 10-15 more prime years ahead of it.Inc. VAT£8,134.24 -

Gentle first impression, almost a touch floral – lavender? herbal? – spicy and biscuity too. Broader than the 2002 and less intense, not as concentrated on the mid palate but a little broader, less tightly wound, as you would expect. Still vey finely balanced and creamily textured. Amazingly long finish.Inc. VAT£2,386.21 -

A relatively easy vintage in terms of grape growing, despite a rainy month of August that led to a late-ripening end of season, with the harvest beginning on 23 September. A mineral-infused nose of pronounced limestone character is compellingly complicated by scents of truffle, spice and butter. The palate is dense and spherical with a seductive fleshy texture. The beautifully balanced finish has a touch of bewitching bitterness and salinity. Ready to be enjoyed over the next decade.Inc. VAT£1,401.31 -

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (99)
The 2013 Cuvée S is a young icon in the making. A delayed growing season with heat during the summer and a late harvest yielded a superb, wonderfully complex Salon, a Champagne that balances ripeness, acid and structure. Citrus, slate and floral overtones appear first, before hints of white pepper and chalk add layers of saline-infused intensity. The clarity and precision here are just unreal.Inc. VAT£874.51 -

Wine Advocate (95)
From a recently released bottle disgorged in 2018, the 1997 Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut is showing very well indeed, offering up aromas of citrus oil, crushed chalk, white flowers, warm bread and iodine that are appreciably more youthful than the more mature dried fruit tones that readers will find in bottles of the original disgorgement. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tensile and incisive, with superb concentration, chalky structure and a long, searingly mineral finish. The 2018 disgorgement saw 3.5 grams per liter dosage, somewhat less than the original release. While the 1996 has the edge, I doubt that, 20 years ago, anyone could have imagined how close the 1997 and 1996 would be as they approach maturity.Inc. VAT£1,193.71 -
Vinous (97)
Every bit as monumental as I had hoped, Salvioni's 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is rich, towering and explosive, with fabulous depth and intensity. Dark cherry, smoke, spice, leather and plum gradually open up in a powerful Brunello that still needs time to soften. Epic in its dimension, the 2006 remains one of the very best vintages ever made here.Inc. VAT£957.95 -
(6x75cl) 2007Wine Advocate (97)
The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a pure, rapturous beauty. Layers of sweet red fruit meld into rose petals, licorice, spices and mint as the 2007 seduces all of the senses. The ripe, open personality of the year is present, but there is more than enough structure to provide balance. Floral notes reappear on the vibrant, beautifully articulated finish. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow up to the epic 2006. Even better it should drink well quite a bit earlier than that wine. Sadly, there are fewer than 1,000 cases to go around. This is a magical Brunello in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2032.Inc. VAT£1,102.78 -
Vinous (94)
Salvioni's 2008 Brunello di Montalcino speaks to finesse above all else. Sensual, ever-changing aromatics draw the taster in. The 2008 is gracious and lifted on the palate, yet also possesses a remarkable sense of understated richness. Just starting to enter the early part of its maturity, the 2008 also has more than enough depth to drink well for another two decades or so.Inc. VAT£1,010.75 -
Vinous (92+)
Good full red. Complex, scented nose offers pure aromas of redcurrant, truffle, mint, flint and violet. Juicy, silky and sweet, with highly nuanced flavors of aromatic herbs and flowers nicely complementing the crisp, bright red berry flavors. Not hugely dense but wonderfully expressive today, even if its firm tannic spine calls for patience. This is one of the top five wines of the vintage; in fact, I think it's much better, sweeter and more layered than Salvioni's 2008 Brunello.Inc. VAT£1,012.40
