Hints of dried cherry, tobacco, spice and dried herbs add modest complexity to a mid-weight wine that is best enjoyed sooner rather than later, before the forward flavors mature too much further. The 2010 Chablis Mont de Milieu has turned out beautifully. A gentle hint of spices from the oak frames layers of gorgeous, nuanced fruit. The 2010 shows the depth of the low yields with the minerality of a cool vintage and a finish is both huge and seemingly endless. It is a marvelous, complete wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared. This has one of the more austere and backward bouquets from Billaud this year - one for hardcore Chablis-lovers. Cool, inward and impeccably layered from start to finish, the 2010 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre impresses for its fabulous sense of balance and poise. Slate, crushed rocks, lime and white flowers are woven together in a fabric of unusual class and elegance. All the elements fuse together impeccably here.
