Vinous (88-90)
The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru includes around 35% whole clusters, raised in 20% new oak (this cuvée was racked just before my visit). The nose shows just a slight reduction, but underneath there is pretty brambly black fruit mixed with black olive tapenade. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, quite fine tannin, touches of black currant pastilles and a dash of spice toward the pert finish. Burghound (91-93)
This is also elegant, perfumed and very floral with its pretty blend of red currant, cherry, anise and violet-scented nose. There is lovely tension and minerality suffusing the rich, focused and surprisingly powerful flavors that brim with dry extract on the beautifully long, firm and youthfully austere finish. Black centre, purple rim. 50% whole bunch with two new barrels in seven. The alcohol shows through a bit on the nose. Racked and assembled. Impressive density here, even with some intense red fruit backing the blacker notes. Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2023 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru is completely destemmed this year. It has a fresh and more marine-influenced bouquet to the point where you might misconstrue there being some stems in the mix. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and much more elegant than the 2022. It has fine tannins and nice poise with a harmonious finish. Now with a couple years in bottle, I am erring to the Taylor’s over the Fonseca (although these can always change!) The Taylor’s show more delineation and refinement with pure black currant, cassis, pencil box, hints of marzipan and a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and sumptuous with super-fine tannins, very pure blackberry and boysenberry notes interlaced with cedar, dried fig and a touch of black pepper on the beautifully refined finish. This wine was placed immediately after the super-opulent Fonseca in the BFT tasting which may have been a mistake. This is restrained. Well mannered, discreet, keeps its powder very dry. But on the palate it opens out in the most superb, burgundian peacock's tail sort of way. Another wonderful wine from The Fladgate Partnership. Utterly different from the Fonseca. Upright and straight backed. But irreproachable. My gums are virtually impervious to sugar and acid but this wine set them vibrating a bit. Dried prunes ground up with rocks.Inc. VAT£677.40 -

The 2021 Tabuerniga follows its path of complexity and elegance with a faint iron-like side this year, with notes of blood and rusty nail, a little earthier. Winemaker Pablo Eguzkiza thought that could be because this year the wine has more Graciano. It's also a little lighter, a little more ethereal. The grapes were picked between the sixth and eighth of October, and they were very healthy. They used a small portion of full clusters, maybe 5%, fermented in 3,000-liter open-top oak vats and matured in 1,500-liter oak foudres for 14 to 16 months. It has the harmony, balance and freshness with the elegant and seamless tannins from 2021. 2021 delivered good yields, and that might have provided finer-boned wines, a little in the style of 2016. This is superb. 3,812 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.Inc. VAT£535.55 -

The 2018 Matallana is the only wine they produced in Ribera del Duero, a traditional blend of Tempranillo with approximately 15% other varieties —Valenciano (Bobal), Navarro (Garnacha) and white Albillo—from different soils in five different villages, Sotillo de la Ribera, Roa, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 14 months in French oak barrels of different ages. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.68. The wine is subtle, harmonious and elegant, complex and with integrated oak, very expressive with velvety tannins and a long, dry, chalky finish. This is superb, elegant but with the Duero rusticity and stone minerality. It has to be the finest Matallana to date. 22,020 bottles produced. It was bottled in May and June 2020. The 2021 Tabuerniga follows its path of complexity and elegance with a faint iron-like side this year, with notes of blood and rusty nail, a little earthier. Winemaker Pablo Eguzkiza thought that could be because this year the wine has more Graciano. It's also a little lighter, a little more ethereal. The grapes were picked between the sixth and eighth of October, and they were very healthy. They used a small portion of full clusters, maybe 5%, fermented in 3,000-liter open-top oak vats and matured in 1,500-liter oak foudres for 14 to 16 months. It has the harmony, balance and freshness with the elegant and seamless tannins from 2021. 2021 delivered good yields, and that might have provided finer-boned wines, a little in the style of 2016. The 2018 Matallana is the only wine they produced in Ribera del Duero, a traditional blend of Tempranillo with approximately 15% other varieties —Valenciano (Bobal), Navarro (Garnacha) and white Albillo—from different soils in five different villages, Sotillo de la Ribera, Roa, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 14 months in French oak barrels of different ages. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.68. The wine is subtle, harmonious and elegant, complex and with integrated oak, very expressive with velvety tannins and a long, dry, chalky finish. This is superb, elegant but with the Duero rusticity and stone minerality. It has to be the finest Matallana to date. 22,020 bottles produced. It was bottled in May and June 2020.
