Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91)
Pale lemon colour. Not so intense on the nose, but it certainly is on the palate. On the one hand with a very pure stony backbone, on the other the oak (30%) is quite present at the finish, arguably a fraction too much to suit the character of Vaillons. There is undeniable persistence, though, as the fruit keeps on coming back, and the oak will surely fade into the background. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Jun 2024.Inc. VAT£557.80 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
The 2022 Chablis Vaillons Cuvée Guy Moreau 1er Cru has one of the finest aromatics among several Vaillons, mineral-driven with delicate white flower scents and a hint of brioche in the background. The palate is well balanced with bright acidity, fresh and vibrant, with light orange pith and peachy notes and a detailed, edgy and quite sapid finish. This should drink well over the next decade. Bottled under Diam 10. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£333.24 -
Burghound (87-90)
A mildly fruity nose reflects additional notes of quinine, citrus and ocean breeze. The racy and nicely detailed medium weight flavors that flash a touch of youthful austerity on the refreshing medium dry finale. This should drink well relatively early on.Inc. VAT£201.86 -

(1x75cl) 2004Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)
Perfumed, pure aromas of white grapefruit, mint and minerals. The sweetest yet of these 2004s, with very intense flavors of lime and talc. This wine was moved from tank back into oak so that it could breathe a bit, notes Fabien. Still backward but not austere. Perhaps most expressive today on the juicy, very long finish.Inc. VAT£314.36 -
Vinous (91-94)
(this was in a 50/50 blend of barrel and tank until being blended the week before my visit): Slightly hazy medium yellow. Totally different from the preceding wines, showing pronounced notes of lime, crushed rock and anise. A step up in intensity and pitch too, showing energetic, sappy flavors of white peach, salty stony minerality and white pepper. This very pure wine boasts refined tannins and terrific finishing energy.Inc. VAT£139.73 -

The 2019 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a clean, precise, more floral bouquet than the Valmur; white flower petal scents infuse the citrus fruit, along with a hint of egg whites. Christian and Fabien own an enviable three hectares that extend two-thirds of the way up the slope. This 2020 is almost cozy with concentrated extract at the core. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95)
A glowing lemon and lime colour, really delicious. Immaculate precision on the nose, as steely as they come. Excellent tension, the purest of white fruits, just a little cream behind which is a sign of concentration, supported in this case by really well-judged oak. Huge ageing potential. Youthful bitters in the best way. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted Jun 2024.Inc. VAT£420.80 -
(6x75cl) 2023Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Blended last week. A glowing lemon and lime colour. A complex and classy nose, with a little touch of coconut on top of the crushed oyster shells. Floral too but not honeyed. Good grip to this, with the requisite tension, the oak not fully blended in yet, making for a butterier finish. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted Jun 2024.Expected Price Range£270 - £330 -
Vinous (92)
Bright yellow. Musky aromas of tangerine, orange zest and smoky lees. Tactile, zesty and intense, conveying a slightly phenolic character to the concentrated ripe fruit and smoky mineral flavors owing to the very small berries here--and perhaps to the slightly newer oak used for this wine than for the regular Clos. The long, palate-dusting finish gives an impression of full ripeness without heaviness.Inc. VAT£1,440.58 -
(1x300cl) 2015Vinous (91+)
Light-medium yellow. Nose dominated by musky stony minerality. Tightly wound and powerful but a bit hard-edged in the early going, offering classically dry citrus, menthol and white pepper flavors. This fruit appears to have been picked earlier than ideal owing to the hailstorm and its hint of bitterness will take time to knit. Finishes with a slightly phenolic dusty quality. More disjointed than the Vaudésir today but ultimately more minerally.Inc. VAT£544.54 -
Vinous (93)
The 2018 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru is matured 50% in barrel and the rest in tank, with just a small percentage of new wood. It has a fresh bouquet that is beautifully defined, hints of jasmine and white flowers, crushed stone and peony developing with time. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and slightly waxy in texture. A discreet grilled walnut note develops toward the finish. A complex Valmur, this, and reassuringly persistent on the aftertaste.Inc. VAT£411.64 -
Vinous (94)
The 2020 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a well-defined nose, citrus fruit mixed with pear, wet limestone and green apples, tight at first but responds to aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and fresh with a lovely, lip-smacking salinity that fires up the finish. Excellent.Inc. VAT£429.49 -
(6x75cl) 2023Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-96)
60% has been made in tank and 40% in barrel. I am very happy with this nose. The sunshine and volume of the vintage looks like it suits Valmur. An excellent volume of white fruit and flesh, a dusting of ripe citrus zest, a structure more typical of Cote d’Or, the oak fully integrated and proper persistence. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted Jun 2024.Expected Price Range£270 - £330 -
Vinous (92+)
The 2020 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru has a backward bouquet that demands coaxing from the glass: wet pavement, pressed yellow flowers and a touch of flint. Very focused. Fresh and saline, the palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity; however, it remains quite strict and oddly like a 2021 towards the close. Give this three or four years in bottle.Inc. VAT£413.89 -
(6x75cl) 2022Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)
Pale lemon colour. The bouquet is taking its time, but the natural balance of this vineyard is apparent. Despite the discretion there is a wonderful intensity of very pure white fruit. Only the lightest dusting of coconut. The salinity reinforces the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted Jun 2024.Inc. VAT£938.00 -
(6x75cl) 2023Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Clear mid lemon colour. The bouquet is immediately saline, classic Chablis, a load of energy here, flows across the palate, evidently richer than another year but still in all other ways absolutely typical and very persistent. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted Jun 2024.Expected Price Range£270 - £330 -

Though separated out a few years earlier, this cuvée has been offered as Les Pargues with a wax capsule from 2020. Pale colour with a delicious floral yet fresh nose. This is very classic and benefits from the extra elevage. Straight on the limestone, with lemon juice squirted over the oyster shells. Naturally reductive and that factor is lightly woven in. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Jun 2024.Inc. VAT£346.01 -

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is the first commercial release from Christian Moueix's Oakville property. Sensual and alluring, yet with striking depth, the 2012 is full of sweet red cherry, raspberry jam, wild flowers, all pushed forward in a sexy, layered Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers terrific depth for a wine from this generally uneven vintage. Sweet floral and spiced notes add lift on the finish. I imagine the 2012 will reward readers with a good two decades of fine drinking.Inc. VAT£1,859.57 -

The evolution of this wine has been phenomenal since I tasted it in barrel a year ago with the same black cherry, plum and citrus character but with a turn to orange leaf, dark Chinese tea, and mushroom. Full body, fine and velvety tannins with a touch of dust to the texture. So much chocolate and fruit undertones with forest floor and hints of tobacco, too. Always a more powerful, gravelly, graphite-driven expression compared to the seductive Dominus, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon offers blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, lead pencil, and smoke that give this a Pauillac-like style. Based on primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and aged 20 months in 40% new French oak, it's full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, with a great mid-palate and outstanding length. It has aged beautifully and will continue drinking well over the coming decade. Drink 2025-2035.Inc. VAT£756.80
