Of course, the 2016 Savagnin is not the current vintage, but Carlos Orta from restaurant Villa Mas in the Costa Brava was kind enough to uncork it for me, so I thought it was a good occasion to write it up. These bottles are so rare that expectations are very high, so in that context, I was a little disappointed at the fast evolution of the wine. I found notes of honey and caramel, more evolved than expected compared with other top Savagnins from that year (I had in mind the ones from Pierre Overnoy and Kenjiro Kagami). Of course, it has the textbook varietal notes of tangerine peel, yellow fruit and spices. The palate is round and nuanced, with energy and also quite polished. It is sapid with a nice thread, intense, with integrated oak showing in some creaminess. He is a very methodical and precise winemaker, and it shows in the wine. It developed more and more notes of pollen and dried flowers with time in the glass. It's sold without certification or appellation of origin, but he works organically and with some biodynamic practices, and the wines have no chemicals or added sulfur. I liked it, but it didn't move me. I'd love to see other bottles, but if they are all like this one, I'd drink them sooner rather than later.Inc. VAT£914.65 -
