The 2015 Lagrange, the Pomerol version not Saint Julien, is a blend of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. It has a simple bouquet, perhaps a little monotone compared to its peers, but clean and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with light, grainy tannin. It is nicely balanced, not a deep Pomerol or complex, although the finish slips down the throat easily. Enjoy this uncomplicated Pomerol over the next 6-8 years.Inc. VAT£513.67 -

I’ve criticized many previous vintages of this Pomerol, but the 2019 Lagrange gives notice of improvements afoot. Now in bottle, it has a very pleasant and quite concentrated bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and light truffle scents laced with blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a velvety entry and a ripe, slightly confit, spicy finish. A surprisingly plush and well-defined Lagrange that has lived up to its promise and is well worth checking out. A harbinger of things to come?Inc. VAT£462.38 -

Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953 and located in the northern portion of Pomerol, the 2023 Château Lagrange (Pomerol) is 100% Merlot from gravelly, clay soils. Solid red and black fruits intermixed with graphite and smoky, tobacco-like nuances emerge from the bouquet, and it's concentrated and nicely built on the palate, with a firmer, denser style, ample tannins, and a great finish. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades. Drink 2029-2053.Inc. VAT£390.41 -

The flagship from a 7-acre parcel in the estate vineyard, the 2016 Cahors Le Pigeonnier is another Pomerol look-alike with its beautiful bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, damp earth, white chocolate, and exotic spices. As with all these 2016s, it’s a ripe, powerful, opulent wine that doesn’t pull any punches, yet always stays balanced, elegant, and remarkably fresh. Made from 100% Malbec aged two years in new French oak, it builds beautifully with time in the glass, has a deep, layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It’s possibly the finest Cahors I’ve ever tasted and would pass undetected in a blind lineup of top Napa Cabernets. While it’s no doubt beautiful today, I suspect it will develop even more nuance and complexity with 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years.Inc. VAT£704.46 -

Deep, dark ruby. Very dark, slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, minerals and violet; I would have guessed this wine included some Cabernet Franc (Mega Purple, said general manager Michael Updegraff, tongue in cheek I assume). Very concentrated and intense, with its almost port-like cassis and black cherry flavors leavened by saline minerality. The echoing finish features huge ripe tannins that saturate the sides of the mouth. This wine shows the opulence of the 2012 but a bit more obvious breed and structure. Another classic Napa Valley Cabernet with a lot going on. Incidentally, Updegraff considers this the top Napa Valley Cabernet vintage of his career, which began in 1982. The NV (2022) Extra Brut Petit Meslier is a soft, open-knit Champagne that will likely offer its best drinking on the early side. Lemon confit, white flowers, marzipan and spice are nicely delineated. The brisk acids that make Petit Meslier so distinctive are a bit attenuated in this release. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 2024; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.In Bond£375.00 -

The NV (2021) Extra Brut Rosé de Saignée Les Beaudiers is attractive and quite distinctive. Sweet dried cherry, mint, tobacco, game, licorice and amaro herbs waft from the glass. Strong savory and earthy notes lend quite a bit of complexity. Readers should expect a fairly eccentric style. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. The NV Champagne Ultradition Extra Brut is based on the 2022 vintage with 50% reserve wine, and the blend is 60% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and the rest Pinot Noir. Disgorged in September 2024, with 4 grams per liter dosage, it pours a pale straw/silver color. It’s beautiful and fruity upfront, with loads of fresh black raspberries and red fruit, accompanied by a salty freshness reminiscent of cherries and salted chocolate. Refreshing, clean, and medium-bodied, it has fantastic value. What a fabulous entry wine in the range for this year; it combines intellectual thought with ease of enjoyment and is a true value wine.In Bond£214.00 -

(6x75cl) 2013Vinous (95+)
