The 1999 Barolo Brunate remains one of the most backward, closed wines of the year. Still hiding behind a wall of impenetrable tannin, the 1999 will challenge readers to continue to be patient. The 2008 Barolo Brunate is gorgeous. An open, beguiling bouquet redolent of Christmas cake, plums, menthol and licorice melds into an expressive core of dark fruit. The mystery and allure of Brunate is on full display. The 2008 was quite open just after bottling, but it has begun to shut down since then. Both times I have tasted it, the wine has been translucent, weightless and yet powerful at the same time. That should not be much of an issue, as the 2015 will be released later than normal, a path Marcarini will take gradually over the next few years with the goal of releasing the wine two years later than they had previously. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
(5-Star) This vineyard is worked by horse. The grapes were destemmed, and the wine has been racked to tank. A stylish crimson purple colour. The bouquet is attractive, less intense than Tuvilains, but perhaps a classier balance. The alpine strawberry and raspberry also build really well at the back. Exceptional. Drink from 2030-2038. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Another vineyard worked by horse. 40% whole bunch, still in barrel, 75% new wood. Mid crimson purple. A beautiful bouquet, with a headiness brought by the whole bunches. Dark red fruit with floral overtones. The stems give some white pepper as well, an there is a fine elegant finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£605.00
