I expressed reservations towards Pierre Lurton's 2019 Marjosse in my en primeur report earlier this year and as a result, a second sample was shipped to me. This was so much better. The aromatics are far more controlled and focused with the same black cherries and boysenberry without the shroud of alcohol. The palate is opulent and generous, but much more detailed compared to the first sample and demonstrating much more purity on the finish. This is much more in line with my expectations and I am happy to upgrade my score.Inc. VAT£212.98 -

The Wine Independent (96)
The 2020 Anthologie Cuvee Gros Bec is 100% Malbec from very old vines planted in 1949. The wine is fermented in barrel without too much extraction and aged for a maximum of one year to keep the fresh aromas. Production is very small. Deep garnet-purple in color, it storms out of the glass with powerful notes of baked blackberries, stewed plums, and boysenberry preserves, plus wafts of Chinese five spice, dark chocolate, and candied violets. The full-bodied palate is overflowing with gregarious black and blue fruits, framed by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. In Bond£218.50 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)
I expressed reservations towards Pierre Lurton's 2019 Marjosse in my en primeur report earlier this year and as a result, a second sample was shipped to me. This was so much better. The aromatics are far more controlled and focused with the same black cherries and boysenberry without the shroud of alcohol. The palate is opulent and generous, but much more detailed compared to the first sample and demonstrating much more purity on the finish. This is much more in line with my expectations and I am happy to upgrade my score. In Bond£139.00 -
Wine Advocate (91-93)
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Marjosse comes barreling out of the glass with rambunctious scents of cassis, crushed blackberries and black plum preserves, followed by hints of dark chocolate, anise and tar, plus a fragrant waft of lavender. The medium-bodied palate is soft, juicy and wonderfully refreshing, delivering wonderful poise and expression with a fun burst of pure black fruit on the finish. Delicious! In Bond£101.00 -
Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (93)
Ripe cherry aromatics, firm tannins that are holding everything in place, but generous enough to get things revved up and keep focus on the fruit. This is exactly what you look for in a smaller chateaux in a vintage like 2022 - it's easy to drink with plenty of personality. 20% barrels for ageing, the rest in vat. Frost at the beginning of April, reduced the quantity and meant they focused a little more on Merlot this year, but there is still black pepper and spiced violet notes from the old Malbec.
