The 2017 Le Pergole Torte is a wine of pure and total sensuality. I imagine the 2017 is one of those wines that will always offer tremendous pleasure. Pliant and inviting, with soft, voluptuous curves, the 2017 is off the charts gorgeous. Layers of deep Sangiovese fruit gradually reveal themselves with air. The flavors are so intense but also so primary. I wouldn't touch a bottle before age ten. Readers lucky enough to find the 2017 should not hesitate, as it is magnificent. I can't imagine anyone who loves Le Pergole Torte not wanting a good supply of the 2017 in the cellar. The 2017 has come together beautifully over the last year.Inc. VAT£467.32 -

A pure expression of Sangiovese, the Montevertine 2018 Le Pergole Torte works hard in this vintage to preserve its most elegant and timeless style. There is a point of ripeness and a hint of extra cherry concentration that gives this wine beautiful intensity and verticality. The expressive bouquet incorporates mild touches of spice, earth, pressed rose and lavender bud. I'm putting a plus sign next to my score to underline the aging potential of this vintage. The tannins are shapely and fine, but they reveal tight youthfulness that will soften with more time in the bottle. Silky, supple tannins are a hallmark of Le Pergole Torte. This is a 29,000-bottle production.Inc. VAT£502.12 -

Holding back initially, this wine simply needs more time in bottle, and I have adjusted the drinking window accordingly. The 2019 Le Pergole Torte is a long-term proposition showing initial stirrings of tart cherry fruit, plum, licorice, tobacco and crushed stone. There is a pretty floral tone of violet or rosemary flower even now. Winemaking takes this special selection of 100% Sangiovese though cement and Allier and Slavonian oak. The balanced acidity stands out nicely. There are 29,000 bottles of the 2019 vintage, and I recommend you put yours in the cellar for five to 10 more years.Inc. VAT£637.44 -

The 2017 Montevertine is rich, creamy and beautifully resonant on the palate. Over the last year it seems to have gained an extra bit of freshness, which is of course such a plus in this very hot, dry vintage. Montevertine is often austere, but the 2017 is unusually open today, not to mention incredibly delicious. There is plenty of tannin beneath all of that vintage 2017 fruit. Even so, opening a bottle young is not a crime by any stretch of the imagination. Black cherry, leather, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice and earthy notes develop with aeration, showing just a glimpse of what is in store for those who can wait. The 2017 is a striking wine in every sense. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding further dimensions that will continue to unfold over the coming years.Inc. VAT£563.52 -

Keeping in with the well-established house style, the wine delivers enormous quality and clarity of fruit with bright cherry, rose, cassis and fragrant potting soil. These elegant results capture the promise of Sangiovese. Production is 33,000 bottles.Inc. VAT£421.20 -

This wine beautifully captures the intensity and elegance of this classic vintage. The 2019 Montevertine is made with a careful selection of fruit (with 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino) from across various parcels located at a cool 400 to 550 meters in elevation. Compared to the Le Pergole Torte, which remains more closed and initially shy, the Montevertine currently soars over the senses with delicate berry and wild fruit aromas with mineral, blue flower and candied orange peel. The mouthfeel is extremely fine, but that smoothness leaves a lasting impression. Happily, there are 34,000 bottles on the market.Inc. VAT£573.49 -

Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding further dimensions that will continue to unfold over the coming years. In Bond£451.00 -

Wine Advocate (96)
Happily, there are 34,000 bottles on the market. In Bond£460.00 -

James Suckling (96)
This is precisely structured with racy tannins that are fine, integrated and well formed. It’s medium-bodied, so long and intense. Classic personality. Cool at the finish because of a cool and late growing season. Give it three or four years to soften, but it’s very impressive now.In Bond£316.00 -
(1x150cl) 2015Vinous (94)
Deep purple-ruby. Rich aromas of dark plum, black currant, cedar, graphite and minerals on the captivating nose. Then clean, fresh and juicy, offering flavors similar to the aromas and an extremely refined mouthfeel. Licorice and violet elements feature on the long, graceful, multilayered finish. Very promising young Montevetrano. In Bond£107.00 -
(1x75cl) 2017James Suckling (96)
Aromas and flavors of blackberries and blueberries with licorice and black-pepper. Medium to full body. Chewy, yet refined and balance. Another two or three years of bottle age would bring it more together. Try after 2021 to soften. In Bond£79.00 -
James Suckling (97)
A red with plum and cherry character with hints of bark, mushroom and clove. It’s full-bodied with layers of fruit and a long, flavorful finish. Needs time to soften, but structured and beautiful. Such finesse with strength. Really impressive. Try after 2022.In Bond£273.00
