Jeb Dunnuck (94+)

A gorgeous wine, the 2019 Château Pédesclaux shines for its pure, elegant, yet concentrated style, and it's certainly one of the finest vintages from this address. Cassis, black cherries, lead pencil, and violet notes all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. The purity and finesse are truly something here, and while it already offers pleasure, it deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20+ years.

This is very chewy with dusty tannins and blackberry and blueberry character. Some chocolate, too. Full and layered. Such beautiful violet and black-cherry quality at the end with some raspberries, 56% cabernet sauvignon. 34% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. First year with organic farming. A nice step-up in quality.

There is a really pretty, powdery-tannin texture to this, with dark-berry and currant character. Some orange peel, too. It’s full and layered with a sense of precision and focus. Framed and open-grained in the texture. Velvety. Real Pauillac personality here. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. May be better than 2022.

The 2016 Fleur de Pédesclaux has a generous, rounded bouquet of wild strawberry and blackberry fruit mixed with briar and tobacco aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like purity on the entry, displaying fine tannin and light grip but offering ebullient red berry fruit on the detailed finish. This is impressive for a second wine and will probably drink well after a couple of years.

The 2020 Fleur de Pédesclaux has a more open-knit bouquet than I anticipated with vanillary red fruit and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant sappiness on the entry, fine acidity, cohesive with quite an elegant, pure finish. This is a very commendable Deuxième Vin that surpasses my expectation from barrel.

The Pedres Blanques Rouge 2019 is a distinguished red wine meticulously crafted in the heart of Catalonia’s renowned Priorat region. Produced by the esteemed Familia Fixa, this vintage exemplifies traditional winemaking fused with modern techniques. Hand-selected Grenache and Carignan grapes from steep, slate-rich vineyards undergo a careful fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, preserving the wine’s vibrant character. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, allowing subtle integration of oak nuances without overshadowing the fruit’s purity. The Pedres Blanques Rouge 2019 presents a deep garnet hue with complex aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, and a hint of mineral undertones. On the palate, it offers a full-bodied structure, silky tannins, and a lingering finish that reflects the unique terroir and the producer’s dedication to excellence. This exquisite wine is a testament to Pedres Blanques’ legacy of quality and passion for fine winemaking.

"Our best wine," says Pedro Parra and it's hard to disagree that it's an outstanding Itata Valley red, demonstrating that the region can produce some of Chile's finest wines. Red granite soils with a little clay are the source of this dense, complex, layered, ferrous Cinsault, showing tapenade, plum and black cherry flavours and a sinewy finsih.

Wine Advocate (97)

The single-vineyard Cinsault 2021 Newk was named for musician Sonny Rollins Newk, for Parra, the wildest jazz musician of recent times. He says he finds the wine wild, full of energy and minerality. It was produced with grapes from an old vineyard in Guarilihue that is worked by horse, from vines planted on decomposed and rocky granite soils with some iron and a sandy and silty texture. It fermented with 100% full clusters after four or five days with native yeasts and a total maceration time of 55 days, then the wine matured in an oak vat for 11 months. It has 13.5% alcohol and is austere and sharp, mineral and stony. It's a bit reductive and opens up to notes of fresh blood and iodine, a little Gonon with that herbal side. The palate is phenomenal; it's deep and has grip and is mineral and intense with energy, direct and not shy. Superb. 1,537 bottles were filled in February 2022. This has a strong personality and feels very complete.

The 2022 Vinista hails from four vineyards, two planted on granite in Guarilihue and two on dark, sandy volcanic soils in Ñipas. It opens with a highly floral and slightly medicinal nose that introduces a soft, delicate palate with a higher degree of precision than typically associated with the variety. It concludes with a spry, powdery and perfumed finish. This is a dramatically overperforming and serious expression of País.
