Salty aromas on the nose with fresh almonds - you can smell age and richness but the colour is remarkable, not at all deep gold or brown more bright gold, this smells older than it looks. Lots of pear, ripe and fresh with vanilla, sandalwood, floral scents and softly spiced accents on the nose alongside a faint truffle aroma. The palate is focussed and straight with an iodine, lemon and lime tang in the middle while the edges carry the maturity with smoked meat, cepe, buttery toast, vanilla cream pastry, salt and a touch of exotic fruit. Persistent, intense, complex, rich and so intriguing - a real ride of flavour and texture. Amazingly, the 2009 attained 13.5% alcohol, the highest numbers recorded chez Philipponnat since 1959. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of warm bread, fresh peach, mango and yeast extract, it's full-bodied, thickly textural and vinous, with lively acids—Philipponnat opting to block malolactic fermentation—and a deep, multidimensional core, concluding with a long and powerful finish. Good bright medium red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, violet, licorice and tobacco are complicated by a note of gunflint. Lush and sweet but with outstanding definition and lift to the flavors of raspberry, red cherry jelly, minerals and mocha. The juicy, long finish features smooth, sweet tannins that expand with air and repeating notes of red cherry and flint. A fleshier than usual style of Brunello for owners Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobizer, but this creamy, ripe wine is once again one of the handful of top wines of the Denominazione. In fact, Erbach told me he much prefers this wine to the wonderful '08 he made last year.In Bond£100.00
