Vinous (94)

Smoky basalt notes and suggestions of quarry dust accompany site-typical evocations of sage and mint on an intensely pungent, penetrating nose. Generous, bright juiciness of lemon and lime, along with sheer extract sweetness, keep this almost painfully concentrated, grippingly stony expression of Pechstein from turning austere or overly severe. And extract also seems to be the source of textural richness beneath what initially seems a very firm feel. Mouthwatering salinity adds to the appeal of a finish vibrantly interactive in its expression of citrus, herb and mineral matter.

Wine Advocate (95)

The phenomenal 2010 Reserva is produced with 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and some 5% of the skins of Malvasía and Viura grapes used for the white wine after it finished fermenting. Here, they select the grapes from some of their best and oldest vineyards, put them in cold storage for 24 hours and then exclusively select the grapes from the top half of the bunches. It fermented in 7,000-liter oak vats and small stainless steel tanks followed by malolactic and 25 months aging in new French barriques. This is a vintage that deserves to be laid down in the cellar, as it has all the components and the balance to develop into a superb classical Rioja with a few more years in bottle. Everything seems to be in its place, and all components show high quality: the tannins, the acidity, the oak, the fruit... Highly recommended. One for the cellar. 72,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2013.

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2007 Reserva has a lovely, rounded, sensual bouquet with kirsch, crushed strawberry, vanilla and a faint tang of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, sensual tannins. It is very well-balanced and pure. There are layers of new oak towards the finish, but here I find it singing from the same hymn book as the intense fruit. There is a sense of completeness and composure to this outstanding Reserva. Drink 2014-2025+

Hailing from the celebrated Rioja Alavesa region, the magnificent Remirez de Ganuza Rioja Reserva 2008 is a true testament to Spanish viticulture. The craftsmen behind this vintage, Bodegas Remirez de Ganuza, employ a meticulous grape selection process that involves pioneering destemming techniques to maximise the fruit's essence. Harvested from 60-years-old vineyards, this Tempranillo and Graciano blend underwent malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels for 19 months.

The result is a full-bodied, expressive wine. The Remirez de Ganuza Rioja Reserva 2008 possesses intense, concentrated fruit notes of blackberry and plum complementing the warm spices, cocoa, and cedar base, courtesy of its oak ageing. The finely branched tannins lend an exquisite elegance and reverence to this wine, further enhancing its velvety texture and elongated finish. Representing the top tier of Spanish wines, a bottle of Remirez de Ganuza Rioja Reserva 2008 is a must-have in the collection of discerning wine enthusiasts.
