Vinous (89-92)(80% vendange entier): Good dark red. Purple fruits, saline minerality and bitter chocolate on the nose, lifted by a violet topnote. Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Chezeaux 1er Cru contains 100% whole bunches fruit this year. That comes through on the nose with more tangible sous-bois and black pepper elements, quite open with dusky black fruit and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very lithe in the mouth, the whole bunches are tangible but not overriding fruit or terroir expression. Delicate touches of cracked black pepper and clove line the finish that exerts a gentle but insistent grip. Excellent. |

Wine Advocate (94-96)The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from 0.30-hectare in the Montluisants area supplemented by some purchased fruit from 72-year-old vines in the lieu-dit Les Chenevrières. It has a very pure and powerful bouquet with layers of small dark cherries, blueberry and violet aromas, a little richness of the growing season showing through via a touch of glycerin. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit if sinew on the entry. This dovetails into a structured mid-palate with a pinch of white pepper lingering on the finish that has a real peacock's tail of flavors, reinforcing its grand crus pedigree (just in case.) This is a sublime expression of the vineyard from Virgile Lignier. |

Vinous (92+)(30% new oak, or roughly the same percentage as all of the 2015 crus here): Bright dark red. Very sexy, subtly complex scents of dark raspberry, black cherry, licorice, coffee and mocha, with suggestions of liqueur-like ripeness. Densely packed and thick, with subtle sweetness supported by ripe acidity. Quite juicy and savory in the mouth, then firmly tannic but not dry on the very long, rising back end. The yield here was a normal 42 hectoliters per hectare. This wine struck me as a bit New World in character when I first tasted it from barrel, but today it's clearly communicating its Morey terroir. (Lignier did not open a bottle of his Clos Saint-Denis, as he has just 140 bottles--plus another 140 for the owner of the vineyard.) |

Vinous (89)Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Very ripe, complex nose combines raspberry, mocha and mineral notes with suggestions of exotic fruits. Plush and seamless in the mouth, conveying a restrained sweetness and considerable early charm. Finishes classically dry, with inviting soil tones and ripe tannins. |

Vinous (88)The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis En La Rue de Vergy has an edgy red cherry nose with noticeable scents of autumn leaves/sous-bois. The palate is quite chalky in texture with touches of cocoa on the finish that I feel a bit too abrupt. |
