Wine Advocate (96)

The most classical of the wines from Muga, the 2011 Prado Enea Gran Reserva comes from a warm year that here was cooler than 2012, when they did not produce it. There won't be a 2013 either. So after this 2011, the following vintage will be 2014 but with fewer bottles and then 2015 and 2016. The wine has a developed nose with some tertiary notes, combined with some notes of ripe black fruit and sweet spices. It fees like an open, expressive and hedonistic year for Prado Enea. The palate reveals polished tannins and some balsamic and developed flavors, truffle, forest floor and hints of cigar ash and incense. Stylistically, this could be close to the 2006, which was also surprisingly fresh for the average ripeness found in Rioja in general. 92,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in early 2015 after almost 40 months in barrel. Time in bottle has polished the wine, and it's ready to drink on release, but it's a wine that is going to develop in bottle for a long time.

James Suckling (97)

Really beautiful aromas of crushed blackberry, brambleberry, hazelnut, walnut and light coffee, following through to a full yet so reserved and polished body with fine, creamy-textured tannins. Fresh and exquisite finish. This is a much more refined and harmonic rendition of their classic wine. Three years in French oak from their own production. Very enjoyable now, but this will improve with age for a long time.

The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making. 2016 was a very elegant year, with aging potential, volume and very good acidity and freshness. It's full-bodied but fine-boned, has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.25 grams per liter acidity. It has terrific balance, with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle. They have also been working on the selection of wood used. This wine matured in French and American oak barrels for three years, and the oak is super integrated. 127,808 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020. It was an exceptional year with volume and quality.

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2019 Reserva, sold as Crianza in Spain, comes from a dry and warm year with low yields and concentrated wines. The grapes from the Haro zone, the four from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and 80% of the volume matured in French oak and the rest in Centro European and American oak, 20% of them new, for 22 months, during which time the wine was racked every eight to nine months. This is serious and young but balanced, nuanced and complex. They are shortening the time in oak, as they feel they have better and younger barrels and think the wines need less time in oak and more time in bottle. This is very Muga, very Rioja and very good. They produced an impressive 960,000 bottles and 18,000 magnums of this. There is only one master blend that is bottled at different times. I tasted a bottle that was filled in April 2022 (because of the lack of availability of bottles!).

Even better than the magical 2015, the 2016 Torre Muga offers a thrilling bouquet of cassis and assorted pure dark fruits, lead pencil, graphite, white flowers, and spice-laced aromas and flavors. While this cuvée is always thought of as the most modern in the lineup, it's far from it and has integrated oak, flawless balance, sweet tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's beautifully done and just a thrilling bottle of Rioja that's going to evolve for 20-30 years or more.

Excellent deep red. Complex aromas of red- and blackcurrants, minerals and smoke, along with an herbal topnote; smells much sweeter from bottle than it did a year ago from barrel. Sweet, broad and deep; less complex today in the mouth than the Ruchottes, but offers terrific texture. The tannins hit the palate earlier than those of the Ruchottes, but there also very strong, persistent back-end fruit flavor.

Medium red. Very reticent, slightly reductive aromas of licorice and menthol. Silky on entry, then minerally and tight in the middle and youthfully austere. But this pure, intense wine finishes with superb lift and perfume and firm tannins that show no sign of hardness. This will need a good six or seven years of patience. I would not be at all surprised if the Mugnerets' compellingly pure 2001 grand crus merited higher scores with time in bottle.

Vinous (90)

Moderately saturated medium red with an amber edge. Mature scents of smoke, game, herbs and spices, plus a whiff of asparagus. Surprisingly sweet on entry, then nicely intense and mature in the middle palate, with game and clove flavors joined by black pepper and a hint of pyrazines. My enthusiasm was a bit dampened by a slight peppery edge that dries the dusty tannins and leaves behind a hint of tartness. Perhaps a bit more vegetal than fruity at this point but by no means bitterly green. Marie-Andrée described the 2004 vintage as a great challenge, although she maintained early on that any green character in the estate's wines in '04 were due to incomplete ripeness and not to the ladybug issue that plagued some red Burgundies that year. Medium red with a hint of amber. Musky red fruits, spices, menthol and herbs on the nose, complicated by a whiff of leather. Seamless and suave in texture, with some leather and herb impingements to its red fruit and spice flavors. Offers lovely easygoing sweetness along with complex soil tones and very good vinosity. Finishes with a late dusting of tannins. A subtly sophisticated Clos Vougeot but probably for mid-term rather than long aging. The Mugneret sisters compared this wine to the 2017 version, noting that the acidity was going down at the time of the very early harvest. (13.5% alcohol; 40 hl/h; 3.6 pH; harvested on September 2)

Healthy medium red; not as dark as the '15. Spicy red fruits, menthol and musky soil tones on the expressive nose, along with the salty aspect of this vintage. Fine-grained, floral and mineral-driven, conveying terrific cut to its strawberry, raspberry and blood orange fruit flavors. But owing to its strong saline minerality, this dense but juicy wine is about much more than primary fruit and is already long on personality. More savory and refined than the very young 2015 if not nearly as massive as that wine. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering spice element. Healthy dark red with ruby highlights. Lovely floral, spicy high tones to the aromas of dark cherry and raspberry. In a distinctly ripe style for this bottling, offering sweet, plush flavors of black raspberry, licorice, flowers, crushed rock and bitter chocolate. Still some new oak to be absorbed but this large-scaled Clos Vougeot has the stuffing to support it. Finishes ripely tannic and very long, with palate-saturating richness and captivating savory minerality. The first wine of my morning vertical tasting with the Mugneret sisters and a true breakfast of champions. (13.3% alcohol; 3.5 pH; harvested on September 5; 41 hectoliters per hectare produced; aged in 70% new oak)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has the more complex bouquet of Mugneret’s 2018s, featuring fragrant red berries mixed with dried blood, undergrowth and wilted rose petal, a touch of orange peel emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very intense black fruit and a little more depth and grip than the Ruchottes at the moment. There is real density to this Clos Vougeot that make it the best from the domaine this year.

More savory and refined than the very young 2015 if not nearly as massive as that wine. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering spice element. (12.9% alcohol; 3.7 pH, 42 hl/h; harvested on September 21)

Vinous (96)

Vinous (96)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has the more complex bouquet of Mugneret’s 2018s, featuring fragrant red berries mixed with dried blood, undergrowth and wilted rose petal, a touch of orange peel emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very intense black fruit and a little more depth and grip than the Ruchottes at the moment. There is real density to this Clos Vougeot that make it the best from the domaine this year.
