2019 |
Alkina Polygon No. 1 Shiraz 2019 (3x75cl) Decanter (98)Delicate yet formidable, this wine’s dense, multiple layers of complex texture and flavour speak eloquently. There’s fresh raspberry and graphite, rhubarb and red earth, dark plum and ironstone, and a suggestion of sage and nutmeg among blackberry bite, caressed by fine tannins. Sourced from only 200 vines planted in the 1950s, this 0.27ha micro-terroir boasts red-brown earth over limestone with traces of iron, providing fruit of rare depth and concentration. More sensuous and ethereal that its raw-boned sibling Alkina Polygon 5, but their common characteristic is extraordinary length of the purest flavours.

Alkina Polygon No. 3 Grenache 2018 (1x150cl) The World of Fine Wine (98)Red and purples. There is a complex yet glorious aroma to this wine. Blueberries, spices, chocolate. Wonderfully fragrant. the texture is compellingly supple. Finely balanced and with a pleasing flick of vibrant acidity. Cherries emerge on the palate and a tobacco-leaf/cigar-box note (reminiscent of a fine Cohiba Siglo VI). Chalky the tannins might be, but they quickly dissolve into something wonderfully cushiony and gentle. Elegance personified. A superb Grenache.

Alkina Polygon No. 5 Grenache 2018 (1x150cl) The World of Fine Wine (97)Even darker in colour than No. 3, and the aroma here is a little more closed at even this early stage, not quite as alluring. Warm earth, chocolate, black fruits, a hint of woodsmoke. This is more burly, more concentrated. Excellent complexity. The tannins here are not as cashmere-like - more chalky and firmer, more mouth-coating; perhaps more what one expects from Grenache. Fuller in flavor, great structure, bright acidity, and a very long finish. Another superb wine and again, a great future. Indeed, this would seem to have an even longer-focus than No. 3.

2016 |
Ata Rangi Martinborough Pinot Noir McCrone 2016 (6x75cl) The Real Review (96)Line-priced with the Home Block Pinot Noir, this is a slightly more robust style thanks, perhaps, to more clay-rich soils. It's an elegant pinot noir with cherry, spice, anise, floral, violet, cigar box and fine, stemmy tannins. A little closed at this stage but with the potential to develop well with bottle age.

2013 |
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2013 (12x75cl) James Suckling (98-99)A significant pinot noir that displays immense quality, depth and completeness tasted ahead of bottling. Very complex indeed with exotic spices, meaty charcuterie and game meats. A fabulous array of different cherry fruit characters, hints of citrus zest and saffron plus some foresty bracken to add. The palate has immense energy and depth yet treads lightly on balanced structure and even shape, the tannins wind out and around supple flesh, gathering together and fanning at the finish, the acidity is bright throughout and the finish holds long. A masterpiece. Commanding and seductive pinot noir at its finest.

2014 |
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2014 (12x75cl) Raymond Chan (100)Full, even, black-hued ruby-red with youthful purple tints. The nose is very full with softly concentrated and layered aromas of rich, ripe, dark red berries and cherries along with nuances of dark red plums entwined with fragrant violet florals, fresh herb and spicy detail. The aromatics blossom to reveal notes of raspberry liqueur, earth and minerals. This exudes richness allied to elegance and finesse. Medium-full bodied, vibrantly succulent and lusciously sweet fruit flavours of dark red berry and cherry fruit are harmoniously melded with flavours of ripe dark plums and fragrant violet florals, dark herbs, spices and red licorice. The flavours are seamlessly mouthfilling and supported by refined, flowery tannin extraction, and enlivened by poised acidity. This has drive, energy and fine linearity, and the wine carries to a very long and sustained, rich finish of spiced cherries and raspberry liqueur. This is a beautifully rich and succulent, elegantly balanced and refined Pinot Noir with seamless-flowing, ripe flavours of dark berry and cherry fruit with complexing floral and herbal detail. Match with duck, pork, beef and lamb dishes over the next 7-10 years. Fruit from the oldest parcels, 40% Abel clone with the remainder clones 5, Dijon and 10/5, indigenous yeast fermented with 25% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 20-26 days on skins and aged 11 months in 35% new French oak barrels.

2018 |
Ata Rangi Raranga Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (12x75cl) Vinous (89)This is Sauvignon Blanc made in a host of ways, hence the name Raranga, which means “woven” in Māori. There were parcels fermented in tank and in barrels, while a small proportion was fermented on skins, and a splash was whole-bunch fermented. After a couple of years, this is starting to shed its primary fruit and taking on characters of lanolin and oatmeal alongside citrus, pear and lemon tart. It has good depth and concentration and offers some interest texturally. The finish is clean and zesty although a little brief.

Babich Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (84)The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough) is lightly spritzy with moderately concentrated aromas reminiscent of passionfruit, sweat (but no blood or tears), citrus and a lightly reductive note. This is a dry, clean and crisp example; its light body is given a touch of flesh through the midpalate. Classic stuff for drinking young.

Ben Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz 2004 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)(from vines reportedly between 85 and 115 years of age) Inky ruby. Spicy blackberry, cherry and dark chocolate on the nose, with complicating notes of espresso and dried violet. Cool and restrained, with a suave, silky tone to the dark fruit flavors and gentle acids bringing freshness and energy. Nothing overdone here. There's impressive clarity and length to the blackberry and blackcurrant flavors. Really gorgeous.

Bethany East Grounds Shiraz 2017 (6x75cl) Halliday Wine Companion (97)From the estate's highest vineyard block situated on the eastern ridge of the Barossa foothills, and is a quite lovely example of shiraz grown in a temperate climate. It's medium-bodied, the bouquet full of spice, red fruits, rose petals and cherry blossom characters all translating straight to the long, supple palate. Tannins and oak are part of the backdrop, simply providing the finish of the wine.

2018 |
Blank Canvas Abstract Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (18)If the Holdaway Sauvignon was all about the fruit, with a little bit of winemaking, this is more about the winemaking but could not be built like this without that same fruit quality and intensity – as it opens there’s blackcurrant leaf and an almost hidden note of tropical fruit and richness. Marked struck-match, smoky, cordite first impression, but not excessive unless you don’t like this style. This is bold, fresh, with the start of some cedary development of bottle age. On the palate, the texture is rounded and deep, filling the mouth but still incredibly fresh. Long, mouth-watering, salty finish, and a promise of more bottle-aged complexity to come. Delicious now but no rush. Classy, complex, distinctive. For lovers of Sauvignon in the style of Dogpoint Section 94.

Blank Canvas Escaroth Pinot Noir 2019 (6x75cl) Cameron Douglas MS (97)A perfumed, complex bouquet with aromas of roses and ripe cherry, a soft raw sugar and baking spices scent with a core of silty soil minerality. Equally complex with a firm yet finely textured mouthfeel, harmonious synergies between fruit, minerality, tannins and acidity. With each taste the complexity expands with flavours of cherry and plum, forest berries and wild flowers. A Grand Cru level wine with a delicious, layered, perfumed, youthful and long. Best drinking from late 2022 through 2030+.

2020 |
Blank Canvas Reed Chardonnay 2020 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (18)Seductive and well-judged ‘reductive’ (smoky, struck-match) aroma and really toasty as it opens up, something cedary. Very Coche Dury but, most importantly, there is the fruit intensity to carry off this winemaking style. Nutty, creamy, mealy citrus. So many things going on that it makes you slow down to try to enjoy all this complexity. Deep, deliciously fresh and incredibly persistent with an aftertaste of savoury/mineral citrus. Worth every penny of its NZ price of $45 (from the producer's website). Classy and got better and better over the few days post opening.

2019 |
Blank Canvas Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17.5+)Mid cherry red. A notably savoury aroma though no lack of dark and dark-red fruits lifted by a hint of perfumed sweetness, almost a floral note, highlighted by the whole-bunch component, which adds a herbal but not unripe quality which shows more on the day after opening. On the palate, this is a beauty, firmly structured but with extreme tannic finesse. That savoury character on the palate too, with just a hint of stems adding to the well-balanced freshness. Plenty of Southern Valleys character and power here, in an elegant style, very slightly chewy at this young stage but even so it’s hard to resist drinking it now even though it should age well. Just goes to show that Marlborough doesn’t have to make tutti-frutti Pinot.

Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir 2016 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (18)Lightish mid ruby, not star bright because unfiltered. Pretty, aromatic red fruits with the freshness of stem influence but without being overtly stemmy – the freshness and structure of stems but no greenness. Already quite complex on the nose, with hints of floral and citrus as well as the red fruits. There's intensity without unwanted concentration, the fruit is sweet but not overly so and the tannins already silky. Freshness to the long finish.

Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous (95)A sexy, savory and superlative Pinot Noir. Leave your preconceptions of Marlborough Pinot in the same place as your corkscrew (it's a screwcap) when you open this wine. It has delightful clarity and grace as well as an assured presence. The Thomsons have included 40% whole cluster in this fermentation, and that's detectable in lifted aromatics that are reminiscent of violet, spice and green herbs. Fine chalky tannins on the perfumed finish.

Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2017 (6x75cl) Halliday Wine Companion (99)One of Australia's icons. The decision not to use any new French oak, and to limit the alcohol to 13.5%, has resulted in a wine with a unique sense of place. It is also superbly balanced, dark fruits married to superfine tannins - another feature of a classic Hunter shiraz.

Brokenwood ILR Semillon Reserve 2009 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)(10.5% alcohol): Light yellow-gold. Vibrant, mineral-laced lemon, quince and honeysuckle aromas show a hint of waxiness that builds with air. Dry, taut and chewy on the palate, offering bitter citrus pith and quinine flavors and a strong note of tarragon. This sharply delineated, deep wine finishes with superb tension and resonating floral and mineral qualities. Experience says that it will age effortlessly.

Brokenwood ILR Semillon Reserve 2011 (6x75cl) Halliday Wine Companion (97)When I first tasted this wine in Oct '15 I made this note: Has the green tinge to its colour that always excites me. It has a lovely combination of lemongrass freshness with perfect first stage development of sweet fruit and incipient honey (which will take years to fully evolve). In the meantime, citrus rules the roost, allied with mouth-watering acidity. Now 15 months down the track, the honey is a little more obvious, but the all-important acidity remains the spine of the wine, and always will.

A fragrant bouquet floats out of the glass and introduces a palate that has the best of all worlds: lemon, lemon curd, beeswax and fruit spice with no hint of the searing acidity Hunter Valley semillon can throw at the unwary. Here it is perfectly (and naturally) balanced. A worthy companion to the sublime Graveyard Shiraz '18.
