2013 |
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2013 (12x75cl) James Suckling (98-99)A significant pinot noir that displays immense quality, depth and completeness tasted ahead of bottling. Very complex indeed with exotic spices, meaty charcuterie and game meats. A fabulous array of different cherry fruit characters, hints of citrus zest and saffron plus some foresty bracken to add. The palate has immense energy and depth yet treads lightly on balanced structure and even shape, the tannins wind out and around supple flesh, gathering together and fanning at the finish, the acidity is bright throughout and the finish holds long. A masterpiece. Commanding and seductive pinot noir at its finest.

2014 |
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2014 (12x75cl) Raymond Chan (100)Full, even, black-hued ruby-red with youthful purple tints. The nose is very full with softly concentrated and layered aromas of rich, ripe, dark red berries and cherries along with nuances of dark red plums entwined with fragrant violet florals, fresh herb and spicy detail. The aromatics blossom to reveal notes of raspberry liqueur, earth and minerals. This exudes richness allied to elegance and finesse. Medium-full bodied, vibrantly succulent and lusciously sweet fruit flavours of dark red berry and cherry fruit are harmoniously melded with flavours of ripe dark plums and fragrant violet florals, dark herbs, spices and red licorice. The flavours are seamlessly mouthfilling and supported by refined, flowery tannin extraction, and enlivened by poised acidity. This has drive, energy and fine linearity, and the wine carries to a very long and sustained, rich finish of spiced cherries and raspberry liqueur. This is a beautifully rich and succulent, elegantly balanced and refined Pinot Noir with seamless-flowing, ripe flavours of dark berry and cherry fruit with complexing floral and herbal detail. Match with duck, pork, beef and lamb dishes over the next 7-10 years. Fruit from the oldest parcels, 40% Abel clone with the remainder clones 5, Dijon and 10/5, indigenous yeast fermented with 25% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 20-26 days on skins and aged 11 months in 35% new French oak barrels.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2019 (6x75cl) The Real Review (98)Elegant, seamless pinot noir with fragrant, floral, red rose, dark cherry, anise, spice and restrained savoury and fresh herb characters. It's a complex medley of appealing flavours supported by an ethereal texture and a lingering finish. A surprisingly accessible wine from an excellent vintage. Should develop well with bottle age.

2018 |
Ata Rangi Raranga Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (12x75cl) Vinous (89)This is Sauvignon Blanc made in a host of ways, hence the name Raranga, which means “woven” in Māori. There were parcels fermented in tank and in barrels, while a small proportion was fermented on skins, and a splash was whole-bunch fermented. After a couple of years, this is starting to shed its primary fruit and taking on characters of lanolin and oatmeal alongside citrus, pear and lemon tart. It has good depth and concentration and offers some interest texturally. The finish is clean and zesty although a little brief.

Craggy Range Pinot Noir Aroha 2020 (6x75cl) The Real Review (98)A few months ago I tasted and enthused about a barrel sample of this wine and am pleased to report that it is as I remembered it. It has lost a bit of puppy fat perhaps but remains a supremely suave and stylish pinot noir with layers of cherry, berry, violet, five-spice, anise, struck-flint and nutty oak flavours. Fruit sweetness, gentle acidity and fine tannins marry into each other to give the wine a seamless backbone. It defines elegance. I look forward to re-tasting it after a few more years in bottle.

2021 |
Craggy Range Te Muna Sauvignon Blanc 2021 (6x75cl) Decanter (96)Family-owned winery Craggy Range was founded in 1998 in Hawke’s Bay, and the family has pursued a single-vineyard approach to winemaking. For this wine, grapes are grown on limestone-speckled stony soils in Martinborough. It is fermented in a mixture of oak and stainless steel followed by four months ageing in barrique. Roger Jones: A mellow, yellow wine with buttercups, green herbs and rosemary flowers, a silky purity and freshness. Stunning. Melanie Brown: The perfect collaboration of sweet fruit and vegetal aromas. Grapefruit, elderflower and sweet pea shoots, plus lively acid and purity galore. This is next-level elegant. Rebecca Palmer: Tart lemon-lime and whitecurrant notes with hint of spice. Silky texture, lifted by oak. Spice notes on the finish.

Escarpment Kiwa Pinot Noir 2016 (6x75cl) James Suckling (94)Earthy, sinewy and savory with a world of spice and fragrant cherry aromas. This has a succulent palate and a wealth of fleshy red cherries and plums with wild herbs and an almost bracken edge. The palate has lithe, juicy and assertively tannic drive. Good weight and depth. Acidity is a feature. Sappy, ripe-tannin finish. Drink in 2022.

Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2013 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (92)Medium ruby purple colored, the 2013 Kupe Pinot Noir has a youthfully muted nose revealing suggestions of black berries plus whiffs of charcoal, bay leaf, lavender and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, taut and firmly textured at this early stage, it gives gentle mineral laced black fruit flavors and has very good persistence.

2014 |
Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2014 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)(14% alcohol; from a 1999 planting; this is Escarpment's top Pinot bottling): Bright red with ruby tones. Alluring aromas of black raspberry, musky spices, dark chocolate, anise, peppery stems and resiny earth. Wonderfully silky and plush, offering insidious intensity to its flavors of raspberry, dusty herbs and saline minerality; really mounts toward the back end. The slowly building finish dusts the entire palate with very smooth tannins and leaves behind an impression of savory extract. The longest and thickest of the Pinots I tasted this year from Escarpment, but the wine's herbal, saline and spice elements keep it light on its feet.

Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2018 (6x75cl) The Real Review (96)Deepish, bright, youthful red/purple colour, with a lovely fragrant bouquet of red and dark cherries, strawberry and rose petals. It's complex and foresty too, but shows more primary fruit and perfume than usual for a young Escarpment pinot. Dried flowers, dried herb, savoury underbrush aromas. Very complex and profound in the mouth, with a very long carry. The tannins are in excellent harmony. An outstanding vintage for this vineyard. (70% whole-bunches)

2013 |
Escarpment Te Rehua Pinot Noir 2013 (6x75cl) James Suckling (96-97)The most brooding of the Escarpment pinot noirs. This has a dark, minerally nose with graphite and slate that builds into earth-crusted herbs, toasted nuts, dark chocolate and glac_ orange peel, not to mention wet earth and crushed violets. The complexity is deeply integrated. On the palate there's striking clarity and focus: The tannins are fine-tuned, super smooth and rippling with energy, driving long, smooth and clear dark cherry and plum flavors that run alongside and wash up through the finish. A classic rendition of pinot in the iron fist and velvet glove style.

2013 |
Martinborough Home Block Pinot Noir 2013 (6x75cl) Vinous (90)Bright medium red. Sexy spicy lift to the aromas of red raspberry, underbrush and wild herbs. Broad, dry and classic in a savory Burgundian style, conveying a restrained sweetness to its flavors of raspberry, spices and earth. This very suave, long wine finishes with fine-grained tannins and lovely perfumed lift. Seems more firmly structured than the 2012 version but remains light on its feet.
