Bruno Clair Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2014 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2014 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru has a tightly wound, stony and rather stoic bouquet at first, one that demands patience. This is not as immediate as its peers. Eventually there are subtle rose petal notes, orange zest and cold granite aromas that unfurl, giving a fleeting glimpse -- a premonition of what is to come. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin, touches of orange rind infusing the blackberry and blueberry fruit, controlled and quite structured towards the finish that has great nervosité. Alongside the Clos Saint-Jacques this is Bruno Clair's best 2014.

Bruno Clair Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2016 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2016 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru has a very stern bouquet, quite distant at first, then gradually almost reluctantly unfurling with sea-influenced black fruit, hints of brine and oyster shell in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boded tannin, foursquare for a Bonnes Mares, eschewing flamboyance for something more noble. This is certainly a more Morey-inspired Bonnes Mares than Chambolle, but nevertheless is a very fine wine of considerable breeding.

A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice and earth hints. The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a limpid deep purple. It has a heavenly bouquet distantly related to the Les Amoureuses, offering precocious but detailed blueberry, black cherry, crushed iris petal and crushed limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy, marine-influenced opening, a tang of shucked oyster shells infusing the black and blueberry fruit, leading to a detailed, tensile, lightly spiced finish. A long tail of white pepper lingers on the aftertaste. This is absolutely divine.

(from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard). A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. Wine Advocate (92-94)

The most elegant wine in the cellar is the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, a classy offering that bursts with aromas of black raspberries, cherries, rose petals, dark chocolate, spices and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with an ample core of fruit, melting tannins and a long, sappy finish.

Wine Advocate (98)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Musigny Vielles Vignes Grand Cru from de Vogüé has slightly brighter and more vivacious fruit than J-F Mugnier, and in fact, the two wines seem to go in two different trajectories in the glass, this blossoming and the other becoming more occluded. De Vogüé's Musigny is unashamedly floral in style, very elegant and yet delineated. There is a noticeable estuary scents, mudflats and seaweed, that begin to permeate the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, wonderful acidity and succinctly integrated new oak that is barely tangible. It is intense but elegant, long and tender in the mouth. It is a fabulous Musigny, one of the best that the domaine has produced in recent years.

Vinous (96+)

Very dark bright red. Great purity and lift to the aromas of black cherry, violet, graphite, bitter chocolate and minerals. Showing less obvious density today than the Bonnes-Mares but this is extremely tight and unevolved, with its saline crushed stone and mineral elements currently dominating its underlying fruit. The yield was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, due in large part to millerandage, but this extremely imploded Musigny is showing little of the early sweetness one might expect from tiny berries. Finishes with outstanding flavor authority, length and grip. This wine should go on for decades.

An openly exotic nose offers glimpses of black cherry liqueur, ginger, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and orange peel. The tighter and much more mineral-driven big-bodied flavors also possess evident muscle on the powerful and dense yet beautifully refined finish that goes on and on. This is also a bit less structured though with that said, this is going to need at least 15 years to reach its apogee. In a word, terrific.

The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is even darker than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a spectacular bouquet of intense black fruit, blueberries and shucked oyster shells, the mineralité heightened over the Bonnes-Mares and lending a great deal of precision. The palate is medium-bodied with blueberry, boysenberry and black currant fruit, extraordinary tension, razor-sharp acidity and a dash of white pepper on the crystalline finish. One of the finest Musignys I have tasted from barrel at de Vogüé.

(from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay). This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. The concentrated, powerful and decidedly muscular flavors retain plenty of refinement and minerality that conclude in a wonderfully complex and superbly long finale. The mid-palate texture is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and the finish just goes on and on. This too is brilliant, and the word Zen definitely comes to mind. (95-98)/2041+

Wine Advocate (87-89)

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from two parcels that Thomas told me were only slightly touched by the frost, and it matured in one-third new oak. It has a crisp, well-defined and very natural bouquet that unfolds gracefully in the glass with vibrant red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannin and tightly knit red fruit. Maybe it misses a little weight toward the back end due to the difficulties in the appellation and the frost, but I admire the transparency here.

From a parcel with white soils, the 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pretty, wafting from the glass with notes of rose petal, blood orange, wild berries and savory bass notes. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and fine-boned, with chalky structuring tannins, juicy acids and a vibrant core of fruit. The style here is exquisite, and if Mortet can coax a little more depth and concentration from these vines in future vintages while retaining its elegant profile, he will soon number among this grand cru's greatest exponents.

Wine Advocate (88-90)

The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from 8 parcels of vine scattered around the appellation, the vines averaging between 50 and 60 years in age. It has corpulent and very pure red berry fruit on the nose that is harmonious and rounded. The palate is rounded and very smooth in the mouth (and this sample was not taken from a new barrel that will ultimately constitute around 25% of the blend.) This should turn out to be quite a sumptuous village cru.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru from de Vogüé did not show as well as I was expecting. On this occasion it was showing too much oak on the nose that was masking terroir expression -- at least at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and rounded black fruit, well integrated new oak, quite plush in style with more blue fruit emerging towards the finish. It just lacks a little personality, perhaps exposed by its juxtaposition against other Bonnes-Mares. Closing down maybe? Tasted September 2016.

Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

Burghound (93-95)

Full red-ruby. Dense, laid-back nose hints at cherry, raspberry, powdered stone, mint and flowers. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then supple and subtle in the middle, with excellent density. Finishes very long, with fairly strong but fine tannins and some noticeable oak.

Burghound (95-98)

Denis Mortet Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

From a parcel with white soils, the 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pretty, wafting from the glass with notes of rose petal, blood orange, wild berries and savory bass notes. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and fine-boned, with chalky structuring tannins, juicy acids and a vibrant core of fruit. The style here is exquisite, and if Mortet can coax a little more depth and concentration from these vines in future vintages while retaining its elegant profile, he will soon number among this grand cru's greatest exponents.

Digioia Royer Chambolle Musigny 2012 (6x75cl)
