    Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2019 Amiral de Beychevelle has a well-defined bouquet with perfumed blackberry, bilberry and cedar scents, quite focused and demonstrating more precision than its peers. The palate is well balanced with firm tannins, dense black fruit, just a subtle herbal element towards the finish that imparts freshness. (I believe that will assimilate with bottle age). Cellar this for 4-5 years at least. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

  • Angelus 1986 (1x75cl)
  • Angelus 1993 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

In the new classification of St.-Emilion, justice was certainly served with the elevation of Angelus to premier grand cru classe status. No Bordeaux estate has been making as concentrated and consistently high quality wines as has Angelus since 1988. Even in the rain-plagued vintage of 1992, Angelus produced a wine of uncommon power, ripeness, and intensity. This estate is in many ways symbolic of what heights Bordeaux can achieve when a property is managed by someone as passionate and driven as Hubert de Bouard. As I have been writing for the last decade, these are wines to buy at first release; they can only go up in price given their quality. One of the four or five most concentrated wines of the vintage, this opaque, black/purple-colored 1993 offers an intensely fragrant nose of smoke, olives, chocolate, black fruits, hickory, and sweet, spicy oak. Amazingly rich and full-bodied, with massive extract, it is almost unbelievable that this wine could have been produced in a vintage such as 1993. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 15-18 years.

  • Angelus 1994 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 1994

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 1994 Angélus is everything you could want from a mature Saint-Émilion without pretentiousness. Gorgeous scents of red fruit, loam, chestnut and smoke blossom on the nose, hinting at possibly 1995 rather than 1994. Merlot is in the driving seat. The palate has wonderful balance and a keen line of acidity, fully mature yet certainly showing no signs of reaching the end of its drinking window. Mellow with pliant tannins softened by age, the Angélus boasts surprising depth and flesh, with hints of dried blood and game towards the finish. If you see a bottle, do yourself a favor.
  • Angelus 1995 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 1995 Angélus has a gorgeous bouquet with savoury red berry fruit, meat juices, cumin and light ferrous notes—very complex and engaging with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a savoury entry, and the tannins have softened since I last tasted this vintage. It's decidedly old-school in style, and maybe a bit Bretty? But it is full of character and maintains impressive freshness on the finish, with white pepper and thyme lingering on the aftertaste. Drinking perfectly now. Opened at the château.

    Wine Advocate (98)

The 1998 Angélus, a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc and 60% Merlot, is deep garnet colored with a touch of brick. The nose is completely...WOW! It has an incredible array of smoked meats, incense, cigar box and dusty earth notions over a core of baked cherries, dried mulberries, preserved plums and dried roses with wafts of lavender, menthol and new leather. The palate is medium to full-bodied, rich, intense and packed with black fruit preserves accented by complex savory and earth-inspired flavors, supported by wonderful freshness, textured by plush tannins and finishing with fantastic tension. This still has loads of life—25+ more years!
  • Angelus 1999 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 1999

    Wine Spectator (92)

Coffee bean, berry and spice aromas, almost raisiny, follow through to a full body, with lots of rich fruit and a tobacco, cedar, berry and toasty oak finish. Loads going on. Opulent for the vintage. Chewy tannins too. Serious. Still needs some time.¿'89/'99 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2009). Best after 2011. 4,165 cases made. -JS

    (12x75cl) 1999

    Wine Spectator (92)

Coffee bean, berry and spice aromas, almost raisiny, follow through to a full body, with lots of rich fruit and a tobacco, cedar, berry and toasty oak finish. Loads going on. Opulent for the vintage. Chewy tannins too. Serious. Still needs some time.¿'89/'99 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2009). Best after 2011. 4,165 cases made. -JS

Approaching perfection, this wine is inky, bluish/purple-colored to the rim, offering up notes of incense, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. A touch of roasted espresso bean is also present. The wine has great concentration, a magnificent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. This 7,500-case blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc is one of the strongest wines of the vintage. A deep blue/purple hue is accompanied by classic aromas of smoky blueberries and blackberries as well as incense and floral notes in the background. A beautiful texture, opulence, flamboyance, and purity characterize this stunningly deep, full-bodied effort, another great success from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.
