Wine Advocate (88)
The 2021 Maucaillou offers a very creditable showing in bottle, exhibiting aromas of cassis, sweet soil tones and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy palate with bright acids and soft, powdery tannins. This is impressive for the vintage.Inc. VAT£173.00 -
Regarded as an epitome of opulence, Maucaillou 2022 is a fine wine ethereal in both taste and appearance. Cultivated in the famed soil of Moulis-en-Médoc within the prestigious Bordeaux region of France, the winemaking process stays true to tradition whilst incorporating modern oenological techniques. The vineyard utilises hand-harvesting and ageing in French oak barrels, adding that quintessential finesse and complex structure for which Maucaillou wines are revered.
The producer, Château Maucaillou, is lauded for adhering to the highest standards of quality, punctuated by sustainable viticulture practices throughout their two-century old vineyard. Reflecting the perfect blend of 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot, Maucaillou 2022 boasts an inviting palette with touches of red fruit, cassis, and liquorice, concluding with a gracefully persistent finish.
An embodiment of mastery and savoir-faire, Maucaillou 2022 is not just a bottle of wine, but a voyage into the heart of France's cherished winemaking legacy.

Medium-deep ruby. Captivating nose combines red fruits, mocha and aromatic herbs. Light and lively on the palate, with good precision to the red fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with lovely length and persistent mineral tang. This refined, nicely balanced midweight will be an extremely impressive debut for this new property, which is owned by Anthony Barton of Langoa and Leoville fame. It's uncanny the way this wine resembles its two more famous siblings.Inc. VAT£137.60 -

Melanie Barton has now been in charge at Mauvesin-Barton for 10 years, and there is a real feeling of the wine having found its voice - a gentle, fruit-forward Moulis with finesse if not a huge amount of power. Delicate with vibrancy, plenty of blackberry fruits with well-defined but soft tannins, they have really done a great job in the vintage, a value pick and I can't remember tasting a better example of this wine during en primeur. They suffered badly from frost in 2021.Inc. VAT£217.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)
The 2021 Mauvesin Barton was picked from 30 September until 11 October and aged in one-third new oak. There is more Cabernet this year (52%) due to frost damage. It has a vibrant nose with black cherries, bilberry and perhaps more floral scents than I have encountered apropos previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, not a deep or powerful Moulis, yet well-balanced and surfeit with freshness, a pleasant bitter swerve on the finish.Inc. VAT£126.20 -

The Grand Vin 2022 Château Mauvesin Barton is beautiful and well worth seeking out. Ripe red and black fruits, chalky minerality, and floral notes are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, elegant, layered mouthfeel and beautiful tannins. I think you could safely put this up with the best to date from the château, and it’s going to evolve for 20+ years if well stored.Inc. VAT£129.35 -

The 2005 Mazeyres is a tough wine to taste. Hard tannins and wild, gamy notes dominate the wine's balance. Mazeyres is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It may be that the vegetal qualities of Franc were too much for the wine's balance. This is an awkward showing,Inc. VAT£552.24 -
Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92)
The 2017 Mazeyres is bold, juicy and super-expressive. Mocha, espresso, licorice, grilled herbs and menthol all develop nicely, with floral and savory overtones that add brightness and lift. The Cabernet Franc is especially notable in both the wine's flavor and structural profile. I would prefer to drink this perfumed, expressive Pomerol over the next decade or so. The 2017 is very nicely done. Tasted two times.Inc. VAT£435.70 -
Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90-93)
The 2018 Mazeyres is absolutely gorgeous. Bright, exquisitely perfumed and nuanced, Mazeyres shows just how attractive the best wines from Pomerol's sandier soils can be. Floral notes add lift to a core of red/purplish berry fruit, with striking textural depth and nuance that builds in the glass. Although quite accessible, Mazeyres also offers a good bit of depth while retaining its mid-weight personality. Tasted four times.Inc. VAT£322.30 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (93)
The 2019 Mazeyres has a really lovely, understated bouquet for the vintage, blackberry, warm gravel and light loamy scents gradually unfurling. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh on the entry, with fine-grained tannins, well-judged acidity, and discreet hints of truffle and dark chocolate lending complexity on the finish. This is a classy, very appealing Pomerol that will give 15–20 years of pleasure.Inc. VAT£241.78 -
