St. Estephe was next in line, beginning with an excellent 1982 Calon Segur (sourced from Chateau), which had a great nose. There was excellent t 'n a, chocolate, cassis and blackberry in this singing wine. It also had edge, spice and perfectly singed beef aromas. I was loving this wine. In the mouth, there were peanut flavors and solid t 'n a to this long and minerally wine, but the nose was so exciting that the palate seemed almost a touch disappointing. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just sings Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. (based on roughly 60% cabernet sauvignon) Good full ruby-red. Crunchy cassis, bitter chocolate, violet, black olive and a note of leather on the nose. Quite juicy if a bit firm-edged, with musky black cherry, blackberry, violet and licorice flavors complicated by an enticing whiff of game. Offers a chewy texture but the faint herbal notes suggest very good but not outstanding ripeness. But then this is exactly the kind of fresh 2004 that should enjoy a positive evolution in barrel.Inc. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London, the 2005 Calon Segur is on par with the wonderful 2000. The only real difference is that this needs more time in bottle. It has a captivating nose: blackberry and boysenberry fruit coming at you at full pelt; dried blood and bacon fat developing as secondary aromas just behind. There is fine delineation here - an underlying mineralité sure to surface with time. The palate is very intense and disarmingly youthful, almost ferrous on the entry with layers of ripe black fruit that segue into an earthy finish (with a curious light tang of Marmite on the aftertaste!). St. Estephe was next in line, beginning with an excellent 1982 Calon Segur (sourced from Chateau), which had a great nose. There was excellent t 'n a, chocolate, cassis and blackberry in this singing wine. It also had edge, spice and perfectly singed beef aromas. I was loving this wine. In the mouth, there were peanut flavors and solid t 'n a to this long and minerally wine, but the nose was so exciting that the palate seemed almost a touch disappointing. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just sings Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. The 2001 Calon-Ségur has a delightful bouquet, very pure and a little more vivacious than the preceding vintage, featuring lovely brambly red fruit, rose petals, autumn leaves and a touch of cigar box, all well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little more cohesive than the 2000, and slightly granular in texture, with a graceful, elegant and quite persistent finish. (based on roughly 60% cabernet sauvignon) Good full ruby-red. Crunchy cassis, bitter chocolate, violet, black olive and a note of leather on the nose. Quite juicy if a bit firm-edged, with musky black cherry, blackberry, violet and licorice flavors complicated by an enticing whiff of game. Offers a chewy texture but the faint herbal notes suggest very good but not outstanding ripeness. But then this is exactly the kind of fresh 2004 that should enjoy a positive evolution in barrel.In Bond£87.00 -

Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London, the 2005 Calon Segur is on par with the wonderful 2000. The only real difference is that this needs more time in bottle. It has a captivating nose: blackberry and boysenberry fruit coming at you at full pelt; dried blood and bacon fat developing as secondary aromas just behind. There is fine delineation here - an underlying mineralité sure to surface with time. The palate is very intense and disarmingly youthful, almost ferrous on the entry with layers of ripe black fruit that segue into an earthy finish (with a curious light tang of Marmite on the aftertaste!). It is a fabulous Calon Ségur, though the millennial wine might ultimately possess greater precision. We will see. Tasted March 2015.In Bond£1,728.50 -

The 2011 Calon-Ségur has a light, tertiary bouquet, quite tight at first, hints of dried blood coming through with time, a little toasty in style. This gains complexity and is quite appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine grain tannins, a keen line of acidity with one of the more refined finished in its peer group. This is well-crafted and certainly à point.
