The 2021 Château La Serre comes from 7 hectare of vines on the upper plateau and is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc that was harvested from October 4-10. This medium-bodied, elegant, charming 2021 has pretty red (and some black) fruits as well as classic dusty limestone, flowers, and spicy nuances. It's balanced and has soft, supple tannins and outstanding length.

The 2019 La Sirène de Giscours has turned out beautifully. Soft, succulent and inviting, the 2019 is charming right out of the gate. Sweet red cherry, lavender, rose petal, spice and blood orange flesh out in a racy, sumptuous second wine that is incredibly alluring. In 2019 La Sirène is an absolute delight.

Subdued but pure aromas of peach, orange marmalade and white plum, complicated and lifted by a floral topnote. Concentrated, fresh and spicy, with a flavor of peach and a repeating floral element. Youthful and persistent on the back end, which features sweet butter, vanilla and spicy oak.

The La Tour Blanche 2001 has long been the “insiders’ Sauternes” for the vintage. Leave the Yquem ’01 for the millionaires: load up on one of the finest recent vintages from the estate. It has a potent honeyed, frangipane and white flower-scented bouquet with subtle nougat scents in the background lending it an exotic edge. The palate is extremely well balanced with fine acidity effortlessly slicing a swathe through that unctuous, honeyed fruit. There are also understated marmalade notes with a suggestion of crème brûlée furnishing the weighty finish that goes on and on. Just don’t tell anyone how good this La Tour Blanche is...promise?

Vinous - Neal Martin (93)

The 2010 La Tour Blanche has a vivacious bouquet with aromas of yellow plum, fig, blood orange and a very subtle oily/lanolin scent. The palate is well balanced with a viscous entry and notes of orange rind, apricot, stem ginger and a touch of white pepper. This feels long, tender and cohesive, with fine depth. The 2010 surpasses subsequent vintages such as the 2011 to 2013. It is excellent.

Another blockbuster Sauternes from the vintage is the 2017 Château La Tour Blanche. This ripe, sexy, incredibly opulent effort gives up tons of honeyed citrus, orange blossom, and dried herb aromas and flavors. It hits the palate with serious sweet, yet shows the freshness and vibrancy of the vintage, and is impeccably balanced. It’s a great wine in the making.

Cask sample. Opulent with both green notes of acidity and rich, ripe notes of superbly botrytised fruit. A hint of crème brûlée. Still very youthful but with all the right ingredients packed away.

Lifted and very poised, the 2022 La Tour Blanche is a wine of subtlety and elegance more than anything else. White flowers, mint and light tangerine peel inflections all gather together in a weightless, airy Sauternes defined by its delicacy. Many Sauternes are more obvious, but few are as refined.

A blend of 90% Sémillon and 10% Muscadelle with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2023 La Tour Blanche unfurls in the glass with a pure, perfumed bouquet of pineapple, ripe orchard fruits, white flowers and orange confit. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's beautifully balanced, built around a vibrant core of fruit animated by fresh acidity and concludes with an ethereal, persistent and seemingly endless finish.

A linear and pretty wine with plenty of blackberry aromas and flavors to complement a tight and chewy tannin structure. Medium to full body and a bright finish. More structured than the 2015.

Once again Magrez has made a very enjoyable wine at this estate. There's a ton of fruit on offer and it has been extracted liberally but with care. The construction and the architecture feel more like 2010 and 2016 than many of its peers in 2018. It's a good wine that's clearly going to age exceptionally well. It has notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, dark chocolate, liquorice and black pepper. It has layers of complexity and enough acidity to rein in the exuberance. Note, as ever, that the bottle is the heaviest of the line up - a shame when he is doing so much work to reduce environmental impact. 40hl/ha yield. Ageing is in 33% new oak.
