The 2017 Phélan Ségur has turned out beautifully. A wine of real substance and personality, Phélan Ségur is endowed with quite a bit of depth. Black plum, chocolate, spice, leather and mocha are some of the many notes that infuse this wonderfully expressive Saint-Estèphe. Readers should expect a bold, savory wine driven by strong Cabernet Sauvignon accents and structure. Accordingly, the 2017 needs time to be at its very best. In 2017, the Grand Vin contains an unusually high amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), much of which was able to hang until early October, with 34% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Fabrice Bacquey opted to reduce exposure to oxygen during fermentation with the goal of maintaining as much freshness in the fruit as possible. I continue to be deeply impressed with the work Bacquey, Estate Manager Véronique Dausse and consulting winemaker Michel Rolland have done at Phélan over the last few years. Tasted two times.Inc. Made from 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, the 2017 Pichon Baron is deep garnet in color. It races out of the glass with super-charged scents of warm black and red currants, mulberries, and Morello cherries, plus suggestions of Ceylon tea, rose oil, and Sichuan pepper. The medium-bodied palate is so fine and elegant, with a gorgeous backbone of freshness and densely pixilated tannins, finishing long and fragrant. This is very impressive.Inc. VAT£685.32 -

The 2017 Quintus is super impressive today. Sweet floral and spice nuances give the 2017 its striking aromatic upper register. Rich and dense on the palate, Quintus is a bold, hedonistically opulent Saint-Émilion in 2017. Soaring Franc overtones play off the Merlot nicely, adding both aromatic presence and a real feeling of saline intensity that comes through, especially on the finish. Today, the 2017 is a touch exuberant - almost too much so. Another few years in bottle should help it settle down. The 2017 is not at all subtle, but it has a lot to offer. Here, too, élevage has done wonders for the wine.Inc. VAT£742.40 -

The 2017 Rauzan Gassies is expressive and full of energy, but also done in a somewhat compact style. Dried cherry, iron, mint, white pepper, grilled herbs, cedar and tobacco come together in the glass. I very much like the wine's energy, even if the contours are a bit austere today. Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90+)
The 2017 could turn out to be even better than this note suggests if the tannin soften. In Bond£104.00 -

Getting a big “Wow” in my notes, the 2017 Chateau Rieussec is an extraordinary Sauternes that has everything. Awesome notes of orange zest, honeyed flowers, ripe pineapple, peach, and spice all soar from the glass, and this beauty is already complex, has full-bodied richness and power, a great mid-palate, and a beautiful spine of acidity. It's a brilliant, brilliant wine that can be enjoyed today or cellared for two decades or more.In Bond£260.00
