  • Vieux Chateau Mazerat 2017 (1x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)

I was blown away by the 2017 Vieux Château Mazerat, and you don’t find this level of quality often in 2017. A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, it offers awesome notes of blueberries, crushed rocks, and loamy earth. One of the more full-bodied, opulent efforts out there, it has sweet tannin, moderate acidity, and a great, great finish in a deep, layered, incredibly impressive style. It should drink well for 15+ years.

  • Vieux Chateau Mazerat 2019 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (98)

The 2019 Vieux Château Mazerat might be my favorite wine in the lineup from Jonathan Maltus, and it's just a stunning wine that shows the classic, elegant style of the vintage beautifully. Cassis, black cherries, loamy earth, chalky mineral, and dried flower notes all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is medium to full -bodied, has flawless balance, plenty of silky tannins, and a great, great finish. It's stunning stuff that will benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and cruise for 25-30 years in cold cellars.

  • Vieux Chateau Mazerat 2020 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (94-96+)

The 2020 Vieux Château Mazerat reveals a vivid purple hue to go with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, blueberries, scorched earth, and graphite. While Maltus’s Le Dôme gets most of the attention, I continue to just love this wine, and it shines in 2020 with both beautiful fruit and ample structure as well as one heck of a great finish. I’m not sure this will match the 2018 or 2019, but we’re certainly in the same ballpark, with the style being much closer to the more elegant 2019.

Exceptionally good, there is such heart to this wine, with rugged-textured tannins, edges of slate and salted black chocolate, sculpted blueberry fruits, touch of sage and fresh earth. Great stuff from owners and winemakers Jean-Claude and Jeff Berrouet. Will soften over next few years, but no need to wait too long to get going on this lovely wine. 20% new oak.

Inky ruby. Oak-spiced dark berries and cherry on the nose. Fleshy, rich dark red fruit flavors are lifted by a floral topnote and juicy acidity. Finishes with good back-end thrust, an echo of vanilla and slow-building, slightly gritty tannins. Still, this struck me as being well balanced and rounder than many other 2011 Saint-Emilions. • Villemaurine 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 2019 Villemaurine, which was the final vintage under Justin Onclin, has a well-defined, focused bouquet of red berry fruit, touches of sous-bois and that marine scent that I noticed from the barrel sample. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. There is a veneer of new oak that needs to be subsumed, but this has a lovely plushness and sensuality toward the finish. Needs time, but it will be worth the wait.

  • Villemaurine 2020 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 2020 Villemaurine has a lovely bouquet with fine delineation and terroir expression, red and black fruit, crushed stone and light orange pith aromas. A second bottle exudes more of the Cabernet Franc and imparts a Medocian tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy with a velvety texture, and great depth. It conveys wonderful detail on the finish. Excellent.

  • Villemaurine 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2021 Villemaurine is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Crushed rose petal, cinnamon, new leather, spice and tobacco are beautifully delineated. The 2021 is rich and heady, but also full of intrigue. This Villemaurine is not an obvious wine, as it can be, but it’s all there. Bright acids add salivating intensity on the long finish. Tasted two times.

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years. This is a selection of some of our favourite vintages from Bordeaux over the last few decades, as well some more recent ones.
