  • Fonplegade 2011 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (89)

The resurrection and rebound in quality of Fonplegade under the Adams family of America, who hired consulting oenologist Michel Rolland, has been remarkable. The 2011 continues to provide convincing evidence of their commitment to quality. Slightly more narrowly constructed than usual, it possesses good purity along with lots of red and black fruits and minerality in a medium-bodied, compact style. Nevertheless, it should age nicely for a decade or more.

    (12x75cl) 2009

    Wine Advocate (92)

The basic Fontenil (95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) has a deep bluish purple color and relatively hefty alcohol at 14.5%, but it is not noticeable in this full-bodied, layered, opulent wine, with lots of black raspberry fruit intermixed with some blueberries and crushed rock. Both of these wines have a good 10-15 years of potential in a fine cellar.

The 2012 Fourcas Hosten has more definition and focus than the 2011, offering higher-toned and more vivacious black fruit laced with cedar and crushed stone. There is something almost Pauillac-like about this Listrac. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-judged acidity. It firms up toward the fresh finish, which has just the right amount of dryness and grip and an appealing marine tinge. This is worth seeking out.

The 2014 Fourcas Hosten has a pleasant, clean bouquet that lacks the presence and concentration I expect from this decent vintage. It seems a little diffuse compared to, say, the 2012 or 2016. The palate is balanced with grainy tannins, and quite compact, leading to a bitter cherry and blackberry finish. It does not quite knit together as well as I was hoping, hence my prudent score.

  • Fonroque 2017 (1x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (90-92)

Made from 93% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Château Fonroque has a beautifully complex nose of Christmas spice, fruit cake, sweet oak, and beautifully ripe red and black fruits. With medium to full-bodied richness, a rounded, seductive texture, and sweet tannin, it's an impressive 2017 that should easily end up being an outstanding wine.

  • Fonroque 2020 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2020

    Jancis Robinson (17)

Full bottle 1,325 g. Cask sample taken 7 April. Certified organic. Medium-intensity purple. Quite a distinctive nose of vegetation and herbs rather than brow-beating sweet fruit – attractive. Then on the palate there's some richness but this seems to have more elements at play than many of its peers. More transparent and expressive. Finishes decidedly dry but not drying. 14%

  • Fontenil 2009 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2009

    Wine Advocate (92)

The basic Fontenil (95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) has a deep bluish purple color and relatively hefty alcohol at 14.5%, but it is not noticeable in this full-bodied, layered, opulent wine, with lots of black raspberry fruit intermixed with some blueberries and crushed rock. Both of these wines have a good 10-15 years of potential in a fine cellar.
  • Fontenil 2016 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (92-93)

Very pretty balance to this with a juicy fruit character, bright acidity and a long and flavorful finish. Savory and juicy.

  • Fontenil 2020 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92-94+)

Opaque purple-black in color, the 2020 Fontenil needs a little swirling and coaxing to release opulent scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote and chocolate-covered cherries, plus suggestions of candied violets, ground cloves and fertile loam. The full-bodied palate is rich with generous black and blue preserves layers, supported by beautifully plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

  • Fourcas Hosten 2011 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Ian D'Agata (86-88)

Deep ruby-red. Perfumed mineral and cassis aromas. Bright and juicy on the palate, with very good ripeness to the black berry, cedar and floral flavors. Richer and deeper than usual.

  • Fourcas Hosten 2012 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (89)

The 2012 Fourcas Hosten has more definition and focus than the 2011, offering higher-toned and more vivacious black fruit laced with cedar and crushed stone. There is something almost Pauillac-like about this Listrac. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-judged acidity. It firms up toward the fresh finish, which has just the right amount of dryness and grip and an appealing marine tinge. This is worth seeking out.

  • Fourcas Hosten 2014 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (87)

The 2014 Fourcas Hosten has a pleasant, clean bouquet that lacks the presence and concentration I expect from this decent vintage. It seems a little diffuse compared to, say, the 2012 or 2016. The palate is balanced with grainy tannins, and quite compact, leading to a bitter cherry and blackberry finish. It does not quite knit together as well as I was hoping, hence my prudent score.

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years. This is a selection of some of our favourite vintages from Bordeaux over the last few decades, as well some more recent ones.
