Vinous - Neal Martin (92)The 2001 Les Forts de Latour is one of many that I had not tasted for a decade. Now at 20 years old, it has a lovely, almost melted bouquet of black fruit laced with tar, cedar and pine, rose petal, occupying that liminal point between primary and secondary stages. The well-balanced palate offers a dash of black pepper on the entry and shows good weight and tension. It’s lively yet classic in style, and fans out wonderfully toward the persistent, saline finish. |

Les Forts de Latour, is one of Bordeaux’s finest 2nd wines. It reveals cassis, cedar and tobacco, yet it drinks slightly younger than its sibling. The 2004 is sensual with the vibrancy of this vintage. Fruit forward and beautifully defined, it drinking very well at the moment.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)Open-knit yet deep and powerful, the 2005 Les Forts de Latour is striking today. The pedigree of the vintage comes through in spades. Expressive, perfumed aromatics meld into a core of supple, open-knit fruit in a mid-weight, impeccably balanced Forts de Latour. Hints of red fruit, iron, smoke and tobacco add lovely shades of nuance. Latour's President Frédéric Engerer adds that that 2005 was the easiest and most balanced growing season (including 2009 and 2010) he has seen because his team had the total flexibility of choosing when to harvest. |

The 2006 Les Forts de Latour has a much more precise and lively bouquet than the Le Petit Mouton: blackberry, briary and vanilla emerging from the glass, suggesting that it needs another couple of years to reach its peak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, commendable depth of fruit and tangible mineralité. This is better than some of the Pauillac Grand Vins, such is the detail and energy on the finish. Superb. Tasted January 2016. |

This feels more classically Pauillac on the nose than the Pauillac de Château Latour, the dark and toasted fruits here intermingling with notes of cedar and sandalwood, along with perfumed white chalk and griottes. Full, open, broad and confident at the start it has substance but in a sinewy rather than muscular style, with fresh acids and a very finely knit core of tannins which start to envelop the wine through the midpalate. Lots of energy and tannic grip here;this one says it will need a long time to come around, although I am sure it will be released in just a few years. A great Les Forts which will serve fans of Latour with less deep pockets well. The alcohol is 14.47%. |

Undisputedly great. Readers will find a potent, dark Forts de Latour endowed with massive concentration and tons of depth. The 2016 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, but it holds tons of promise. Hints of gravel, sage, licorice and pencil shavings linger. The 2016 was impressive a few years ago. It is even better today. |

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years.
This is a selection of some of our favourite vintages from Bordeaux over the last few decades, as well some more recent ones.
