The 2018 Bourgneuf is positively stellar. Silky, nuanced and so full of character, the 2018 impresses with its total finesse. Silky tannins and beautifully lifted aromatics give this mid-weight Pomerol so much class. Lavender, spice, mint, dried herbs and a touch of new oak are all laced into a core of inky blue/purplish berry fruit. The 2020 Bourgneuf has closed up a little on the nose post-bottling: blackberry, graphite, subtle loamy aromas and just a whiff of sea spray. Fine delineation and commendable complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, quite structured and perhaps more "serious" than its showing from barrel. Generous helpings of cracked black pepper enliven the second half, firm grip with a very nicely proportioned finish. Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years.
