The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and plenty of briny black fruit that underlies a sapid finish. This has kicked on nicely over its barrel maturation and I have raised my score accordingly. |

Franc signatures are front and center in Saint-Émilion that boasts magnificent aromatic presence as well as depth. Rose petal, mocha, kirsch, menthol and sage are some of the many notes that open with some coaxing. A few years in bottle will do wonders for the tannins. Aside from the wine's striking beauty, Petit Gravet Aîné is one of the most unique, distinctive wines in Bordeaux, the sort of wine that remains seared on your memory. In a word: magnificent! |

Red and black fruits, sappy herbs, flowers, and a kiss of background oak all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness as well as beautiful finesse, balance, fine tannins, and a great finish. Give it a few years and it should keep for 15+ years, if not longer. |

Floral, perfumed aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, cherry, violet pastille, mint and shoe polish; I find strong merlot and cabernet character here, which makes for a complex nose indeed. Lush, dense and rather high-pitched; a lovely combination of sheer fruit and finesse. Still youthfully backward, but already shows superb sucrosity and silkiness of texture. Almost no sign of the new oak today. Solidly structured Pomerol, finishing long and subtle, with a note of chocolatey torrefaction. The tannins hit the palate late and coat the back of the mouth. This offers terrific potential. |

Crushed flowers, raspberries and sweet aromatic spices add nuance on the finish. It will be interesting to see how the 2013 develops over the coming year. Right now there is a battle between the juiciness of the fruit and the slightly drying tannins. The blend is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2013, production is down a whopping 50%. Tasted three times. |

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years.
