  • Rauzan-Segla 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2021 Rauzan-Ségla is impressive. Dark, somber and brooding, the 2021 offers up a heady concoction of black cherry, plum, graphite, new leather, scorched earth, game and tar, all amplified in a dramatic, super-classic Margaux. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. I loved this en primeur, and I love it just as much today. Élevage made all the difference here. Tasted three times.

  • Rieussec 2021 (4x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94-96)

The 2021 Rieussec is bright, floral and super-refined. White flowers, lemon confit, pear, passionfruit and mint are all nicely lifted, with beams of bright acids that lend support. As has been the case in recent years, Rieussec is done in a style that is all about maintaining freshness and verve. There's plenty of both here. The 2021 was harvested over 3-4 picks. Yields are down 30%, which is a very favorable result for the year in Sauternes. The 125 grams of residual sugar are not at all evident.

The 2021 Roc de Cambes is fabulous. It possesses terrific depth and intensity from start to finish. Black cherry, plum, licorice, smoke, tobacco, incense and dried herbs build effortlessly in the glass. All the elements are beautifully balanced. The 2021 is so appealing today, but it clearly offers considerable potential for the future.

The quality at this address has been on a steady upward trend, and the 2021 Château Saint Georges (Côte Pavie) is terrific, with classic Saint-Emilion minerality as well as notes of black cherries, framboise, and wildflowers. It's medium-bodied on the palate, has present yet ripe tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. It's clearly an outstanding wine, if not better. The blend is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

  • Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) 2021 (6x75cl)

    The Drinks Business (92-94+)

Saint-Pierre (St Julien; 70% Cabernet Sauvignon; 14% Merlot; 9% Cabernet Franc; 7% Petit Verdot – the latter, apparently, co-planted with the Cabernet and for the first time in this vintage separately counted; 13.3% alcohol; a final yield of 34 hl/ha; tasted at the UGCB press tasting and at Lagrange with consistent and convergent notes). One of the wines that I had already heard plenty of praise for (from the cognoscenti) before I tasted it. It doesn’t disappoint. There is a lovely cassis fruit here; the palate is very pure and nicely focussed; the oak is beautifully absorbed and incorporated (which has not always been the case here even in relatively recent vintages). There is also a pleasant touch of sweet spice alongside the plum skin and dark berry fruit, an almost slightly wild herbal element and a crushed rock minerality, all of which bring further interest. Above all, though, we have a tender and refined texture chiselled from fine-grained tannins and an impressive plenitude. Still somewhat under the radar (though I have no idea why) and still representing excellent value, this is definitely one to add to the shopping list

  • Sansonnet 2021 (12x75cl)

The 2021 Sansonnet is once again a stand out. Blackberry jam, crème de cassis, chocolate, new leather, licorice and espresso give this large-scaled Saint-Émilion tons of depth. As always, Sansonnet is an extrovert, but in 2021 it benefits from a kick of acidity that balances things out nicely. It was impressive both times I tasted it.

Sarget de Gruaud Larose (St Julien; 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot; tasted, hastily, at the property with Arnaud Frédéric). Like Le Petit Lion, this is a very fine genuine second wine in a vintage in which they are few and far between. Pure, precise, crunchy cassis fruit on the nose and, again, on the palate. This is impressively constructed for a second wine in a difficult vintage. Jeb Dunnuck (93+)

I was able to taste the 2021 Château Soutard-Cadet on multiple occasions and it never failed to impress. Red plums, subtle cassis, graphite, and a beautiful sense of minerality define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a vibrant, pure, focused mouthfeel, nicely integrated tannins, and a great finish. It clearly has the fresher, cooler style of the vintage yet this has density and depth. It's a gorgeous wine that will benefit from just a few years in the cellar and keep for 15+ if well stored. The blend is 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, raised in 70% new barrels (225- and 500-liter.)

  • Senejac 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (88-90)

The 2021 Sénéjac opens with strong Cabernet inflections. Deep and also quite sturdy, Sénéjac is promising. Pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, spice and dried herbs linger on the somewhat rustic finish. Let's see how this comes together.

  • Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2021 (1x75cl)

    James Suckling (99)

This has so much blossom honey and white flowers with limes and other citrus. Stone and mineral undertones. Subtle passion fruit. A truly complex and great nose. Full-bodied and compact with fruit, phenolics and fresh acidity. Just a touch of sea salt. Very long and persistent. If you close your eyes, it’s like a great red wine. One of the best whites ever to come from here. 90% sauvignon blanc, 5% semillon, 5% sauvignon gris. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

  • Soutard 2021 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2021 Soutard unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and spices mingled with hints of violet and iris. Medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, it's deep and layered, with an impressively concentrated core of pure, vibrant fruit that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins and integrated acids. Transcending the vintage, this property's relentless upward trajectory continues.

  • Soutard-Cadet 2021 (6x75cl)
