From a parcel with white soils, the 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pretty, wafting from the glass with notes of rose petal, blood orange, wild berries and savory bass notes. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and fine-boned, with chalky structuring tannins, juicy acids and a vibrant core of fruit. The style here is exquisite, and if Mortet can coax a little more depth and concentration from these vines in future vintages while retaining its elegant profile, he will soon number among this grand cru's greatest exponents.Inc. The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a fragrant, floral bouquet with touches of blueberry, violet, wet limestone and effervescent blood orange. There is simply wonderful delineation here. The palate is very well structured, linear and strict in accordance with the vintage, driving acidity here maintaining the freshness with superb minerality on the finish. Oh yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.Inc. From the domaine’s 1.5-hectares, the usual 20 barrels was reduced to half for the 2012 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. It has an opulent, vivacious bouquet with small dark cherries, blueberry and creme de cassis that is deliriously gorgeous. The palate is sweet on the entry with fleshy boysenberry and bilberry fruit. There is good presence and length here, although it needs just a touch more nuance on the finish. Always a solid performed, this comes recommended.Inc. VAT£938.29 -

The 2016 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was perhaps the one grand cru that I felt was a little disjointed and did not quite deliver the vivacity of the Chapelle-Chambertin or Latricières. It includes 40% whole bunch fruit and was depleted by 30% because of the frost, but it just came across a little dolorous at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This feels a little foursquare and conservative and just needs more of the flamboyance and blue fruit you associate with this vineyard. Maybe this Bonnes-Mares just got stage fright on the day I visited?Inc. VAT£506.35 -

Quite deep crimson. Pretty damned dramatic on the nose! Very charmingly fruity and rich. There’s no doubt about this wine’s grand cru status. So sweet and smooth! But with spice underneath and real persistence. Very long and satisfying.Inc. VAT£787.09 -

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains 30% whole clusters. It has a perfumed bouquet of blackberry, hints of cassis, crushed violet and touches of potpourri, very well defined and focused and delivering the intensity one expects from this growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and just the right amount of acidity. Wonderful harmony and composure here, gently unfolding toward a satin-textured finish that lingers long in the mouth. Bon vin!Inc. VAT£535.69 -

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was cropped at just 20-22hl/ha due to the dryness. Today this is similar on the nose to the sample I encountered in London, though perhaps there is a small reduction at play. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine depth and plenty of mineralité; the 30% whole bunch imparts a pleasant pepperiness on the finish. Quite a cerebral Bonnes-Mares this, not flamboyant, but there is real complexity here.Inc. VAT£169.32 -

Laced with black cherry and blackberry fruit, this juicy red picks up violet, iron, spice and toast flavors. A muscular frame holds everything together, as this leans more to the Morey side than the Musigny side. Best from 2022 through 2040.Inc. VAT£670.79 -

The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru includes 40% whole bunch and was matured entirely in new oak. With intensity on the nose, this is more floral than the Clos-de-Bèze, touches of violet infusing the red fruit alongside light aniseed aromas. The 2021 Musigny Grand Cru comprises one barrel, moved from a new to a used one after racking as they felt the oak influence was too strong. That was a clever decision as the oak is deftly interwoven on the nose and allowing the noble terroir to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, very harmonious with touches of orange rind and cedar towards the finish. Very fine, though the Clos-de-Bèze might be the long distance runner.Inc. VAT£767.33 -

Palish medium red. Rather oaky aromas of small wild berries, mocha, pepper, dried herbs and menthol. Cool and backward on the palate, with rather unforthcoming black fruit, menthol and mineral flavors. Less dense than the 2001. Tough going, even a bit awkward, today, finishing firmly tannic and very long.Inc. VAT£9,215.09
