Airy, cool and high-toned aromas include those of violet, lilac, rose petal, herbal tea and various wild red berry scents. There is fine volume, richness and energy to the equally broad-shouldered and mineral-driven flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere, compact and impressively long finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. Patience is once again advised as this is pretty tightly wound at present.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

Bright red-ruby. Cool, complex aromas of raspberry and minerals, with intriguing mushroom and underbrush nuances. Seamless, dense, thick and full, but with terrific clarity and class. Pure, tangy and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely verve and lightness of touch. Finishes with noble, very fine tannins and palate-staining persistence. A great showing.

Good medium red. Headspinning, expressive nose combines candied red fruits, chocolate, minerals, pepper, smoked meat, five-spice powder, underbrush and flowers; this incorporates all the Chambertin food groups. Hugely thick, sappy and sweet, with outstanding volume and breadth. Wonderfully dense flavors of raspberry, menthol, five-spice powder and underbrush. Finishes with broad, noble tannins and unflagging persistence. This captures the essence of the 2003 vintage, and is showing spectacularly today. A no-brainer for those lucky enough to find a bottle: I thought I was drinking an old-style Burgundy from the '40s.

Vinous (98)

Dark medium red. Ineffable nose combines tight, wild red berries, musky animal nuances and a hint of torrefaction, enlivened by hint notes of wild mint and white pepper. Densely packed and chewy; a distinctly masculine wine with outstanding intensity and underlying structure. And yet the texture is silky too. This utterly palate-saturating wine finishes with explosive rising notes of red berries, game, licorice, pepper, mint and saline minerality and great perfumed persistence. The crop level from these old vines and small berries was between 30 and 35 hectoliters per hectare, as Bernstein routinely does multiple green harvests here to ensure that the clusters finish at roughly the same level of potential alcohol. Incidentally, Bernstein attempted to ensure freshness in his 2015s by using 80% whole clusters to balance the ripeness of the fruit.

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is a dense, powerful wine that is going to need the better part of a decade to soften. Tannic and brooding, the 2018 is in no mood to show all its cards today. There is good depth and tons of intensity, but the tannins are overpowering at this stage.

Dark red-ruby. Knockout nose combines raspberry, cherry, game and saline underbrush, plus a whiff of torrefaction. At once fully ripe and delicate; in a distinctly more feminine style than the Mazis. The plush, rich yet elegant flavors of medicinal dark fruits, spices and exotic flowers are complicated by salty minerality. Less sweet in the early going than the Mazis, finishing precise, classic and extremely long, with serious but fully buffered tannins that melt into the palate.

The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a gorgeous, seductive, complex bouquet of intermingled layers of red and black fruit and touches of sous-bois, sage and rose petals. The palate is finely tuned and a little oaky at the moment, though the oak will be soaked up with time. This is well balanced, displaying a fine bead of acidity, impressive precision and a very persistent finish that is pure joy. An outstanding Mazis from Bernstein. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Partly his own vines now. 100% new oak. Barrel sample – already racked from barrel to barrel. Delicate aroma at once dark-fruited and rocky, crushed rocks. Darkly, elegantly fragrant. Dry, the tannins paper-fine. All in elegance even though the fruit is fully, darkly ripe. Again there is a hint of oak sweetness but very much in the background. Builds to a chewy but generously fruited finish. Excellent harmony in a baby wine. Lots of freshness within the powerful framework. (JH)

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is much more reserved on the nose compared to the Charmes-Chambertin, the fruit a little darker. There is something of a crushed-pebble, almost beach-like scent, a distant tang of cockle sheds that surfaces with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and a little more depth and grip than the Charmes-Chambertin, even if it does not quite display the same sensuality and flesh on the finish. Good potential.

The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a clean, precise bouquet that is focused and direct, offering red and black fruit, crushed stone and more terroir expression than the Mazoyères. The palate is medium-bodied, the sappy red fruit on the entry laced with marmalade and dried quince, and grippy in the mouth, with a touch of spiciness, although it does not fan out on the finish as I hoped. Hopefully it will fill out with bottle age.

The 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru seems to offer more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the 2014 Clos-de-Bèze, with cranberry and fresh strawberry, and a touch of damp woodland in the background. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied but with great substance and depth than the Clos de Bèze; there is a keen line of acidity cutting through the intense red berry fruit, and wonderful mineralité and tension on the finish. It just gradually gains in intensity before it fans out with a sense of confidence and entitlement, as befitting a Chambertin. This is a superb wine.

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has the most backward and surly nose of Christophe Perrot-Minot’s Grand Crus, but it just needs a few swirls to reveal enticing raspberry, cranberry, brown spice and slightly ferrous aromas. The mineralité starts to reveal itself with aeration. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, gorgeous pure raspberry preserve notes mixed with blood orange, sea salt and light quince, and marmalade notes toward the succinct finish. Predictably as it might read, this is the best 2017 from Perrot-Minot.
