  • Guyon Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulees 2021 (3x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

A deep bright purple. The nose has the characteristic (of Brûlées) smoky struck flint note to it, which adds complexity to the red fruit which is as abundant here as the other wines. Lush in the middle then a structure which tames the extrovert nature, a good point of acidity alongside ripe tannins, and some darker fruit to finish. Potentially extremely fine. Drink from 2028-2035.

  • Guyon Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulees 2022 (3x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

(5 Star Wine) Deep ruby crimson colour. At this end of the scale the power of the fruit and the vineyard character completely outweigh the vinification. 100% new wood (Tronçais) is invisible. Instead, we find the slaty and singed character of the vineyard, plus an astonishing wealth of fruit. A thickness of texture which is extraordinary. Quite stunning this year with the blood red depth of fruit. Enough acidity behind and exceptional pure as well as concentrated. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

  • Guyon Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulees 2023 (3x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

5 Star Wine. Ruby purple with a pinker edge. Such an elegant nose. There is a little bit of the singed rock but it barely competes with the exceptional fine red cherry and raspberry bouquet. This could be his best Brûlées yet and that is really saying a very great deal. Sensational texture, unexaggerated fruit, just joyous and gorgeous. Grace personified. The only reason I could consider withholding the 5th star is because the En Orveaux cuvée is even finer! Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

  • Guyon Vosne-Romanee 2022 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

40% new wood, December bottling. Far from the deepest in colour, but definitely not the least elegant either! Rose petals abound. A few fresh alpine strawberries too. This has remarkable tension on the palate and is almost as nuanced as an Echezeaux (at least as, Jean-Pierre thinks!). Certainly there is a gorgeous, almost glossy aftertaste. Highest pH. 5 Star Wine. The village Vosne and the remaining cuvées all see 100% new wood. Glowing purple. Roses in early bloom. Goodness me this is so svelte on the palate with just some white pepper at the back. The fruit is at optimal ripeness, still red but with an additional generosity and the stems are perfectly integrated. A fractional saline note at the back adds an extra little zest. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

Guyon walks the old-vine parcels that produce this cuvée a day or two before harvest, selecting grapes by taste and marking which vines to pick and which to relegate to the regular Vosne-Romanée. The ensuing 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Charmes de Mazières is outstanding, unfurling in the glass with a deep but reserved bouquet of wild berries, rose petal, cinnamon, incense and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and deeper, more concentrated and more layered than the regular Vosne, framed by fine chewy tannins that will need some time. It's a wine that transcends the vintage.

  • Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 1993 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 1993 Vosne-Romanée Cros-Parantoux 1er Cru was purchased off the list at La Gavroche in Mayfair, initially bought on release by Albert Roux at some incomprehensible small sum. I have been lucky enough to have this vintage two or three times now, since first my first encounter in January 2016. This bottle is almost exactly the same as the last, which is unsurprising. It has a very intense bouquet that is so perfumed and intoxicating that your senses are immediately seduced – predominantly red fruit, mulberry and pressed flowers, perhaps this a touch more violet than iris. The palate has a satin-like texture, mineral-driven and, perhaps, less understated than many 1993 red Burgundies are these days. The finish has a sense of piquancy and displays exquisite delineation, not to mention extraordinary length. To taste this wine once was a privilege. Twice makes me almost feel guilty…almost.

  • Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 1996 (1x150cl)

The Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 1996 is a lustrous gem from Burgundy's illustrious 'Golden Slope'. Created by legendary winemaker, the late Henri Jayer, this vintage is epitomised by its sumptuous complexity. Noteworthy for its exceptionally limited production, this Pinot Noir radiates a mix of raspberry and blackcurrant, playfully balanced by hints of earthy spice and smoky nuances.

Aged meticulously in well-seasoned oak casks, this exquisite wine accentuates the profundity of the longing, velvety finish. An ambitious cultivator, Jayer was renowned for his rigorous grape selection, minimal intervention philosophy, and a distinctive, non-filtering process. He meticulously tended to a mere 1.41 hectares of mid-slope vineyards at Cros Parantoux, in the esteemed commune of Vosne-Romanee.

A Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 1996 is synonymous with the absolute zenith of French viniculture and a beacon of Jayer's remarkable viticultural legacy.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2008 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (94+)

Medium red. Pungent perfume of blood orange, licorice and herbs, lifted by a floral topnote. Tactile but backward, with terrific lift and perfume to the raspberry and crushed fruit flavors. The terrific rising finish displays great energy and a wonderfully light touch. Really stains the palate. With aeration, a deeper smoky, earthy tang and more adamant minerality emerged. A beauty, but lay it down for at least seven or eight years.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96+)

(13.8% alcohol with a bit of chaptalization, according to winemaker Charles Van Canneyt): Deep, full red. Very recent but pure nose eventually reveals scents of musky wild red fruits and smoky, stony minerality; a real essence of Burgundy. Deep and thick on the palate; dense with extract and utterly smooth too but with explosive energy suggesting that this wine will repay long aging. Finishes with outstanding rising smoky persistence and powerful stony minerality. These 2010s, bottled in February of 2012, display extraordinary digestibility.
  • Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2011 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)

(vinified with some whole clusters, but a lower percentage than was used to make the RSV and Clos Vougeot): Medium red, a bit less saturated than the RSV. Reticent but rather wild aromas of red berries, smoky underbrush and caraway seed. Sweet and smooth in the mouth; larger than the RSV but less demonstrative and complex today in spite of possessing very good energy. Most impressive today on the rising, palate-staining finish, which features terrific grip and serious spine for two or three decades of aging. Fairly powerful for a wine from this producer, particularly given the essentially gentle style of the year.

The Richebourg is just a notch above the same domaine's Romanée-St-Vivant in 2012, as it is at several other domaines, but it's a close run thing. This is tighter, more focused and limestone fresh, with a hint of "good" reduction, considerable restraint, sweet raspberry and red cherry fruit and pithy focus and length. Understated.

Deep red. More medicinal and reticent on the nose than the Romanée Saint-Vivant, offering scents of black cherry, menthol and licorice. Tactile and dense but very closed and unforthcoming. Less sweet and more savory than the RVS, showing less early sex appeal but more power. This struck me as much more affected by the bottling last March than the RSV.

This 0.29ha parcel was planted (or replanted) in two stages - the 1930s and 1978 - so it has a high average age but plenty of concentration and complexity.

    Tim Atkin MW (98)

The Richebourg is just a notch above the same domaine's Romanée-St-Vivant in 2012, as it is at several other domaines, but it's a close run thing. This is tighter, more focused and limestone fresh, with a hint of "good" reduction, considerable restraint, sweet raspberry and red cherry fruit and pithy focus and length. Understated.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2013 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

  • Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Decanter (98)

This 0.29ha parcel was planted (or replanted) in two stages - the 1930s and 1978 - so it has a high average age but plenty of concentration and complexity. It's one of my red wines of the vintage in 2017, with a heavenly perfume, lovely wild strawberry and summer orchard scents, fine-grained tannins, some sweet spices and refreshing minerality. Stunning.

The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a very intense, well-defined bouquet of blackberry and cassis aromas, hints of eucalyptus coming through with time; this is absolutely irresistible. The palate is very well balanced with fine delineation and poise and shows a subtle marine influence. Superb.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2021 (1x150cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

(5-Star Wine) A noble purple in colour. A fresh suave even plump fruit on the nose, pure in its raspberry profile. Three barrels, two from Cavin who Charles likes (he uses five cooper in all). Not just brilliantly seductive, this digs much deeper yet still finishes on the very fresh red fruit style of the vintage. Thoroughly exciting. Drink from 2030-2040.
