Of the six wines I tasted from Thomas Coquard, it was the 2013 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru that was the standout wine. It has a showstopping bouquet that unfolds with each swirl of the glass: blackberry, violets, small red cherries and a touch of vanilla. The palate has a gentle grip that allows the fine tannins that are wrapped in velvety red and black fruit. This grand cru is all about the build and the way it fans out on the finish. There is palpable energy and animation within this Clos-Saint-Denis, with exquisite precision on the finish. Sublime.Inc. VAT£1,620.72 -

Hailing from the prestigious Burgundy region, D'Auvenay Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013 is an extraordinary manifestation of winemaker Lalou Bize-Leroy’s impeccable skill. This exceptional wine is produced in small quantities, venerating the nuanced craft of winemaking.
This exquisite wine, sourced exclusively from the Bonnes-Mares vineyard, captures the traditional French terroir from which it originates. The hand-picked Pinot Noir grapes experience an extended maceration to capture their intense aromatic depth.
In the glass, D'Auvenay Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013 conveys a deep ruby hue, hinting at its complexity. Possessing an ethereal bouquet of dark cherries, wild berries, and intricate spices, it unfurls on the palate, revealing vibrant layers of depth and a lingering finish.
Such elegance and finesse encapsulate the renowned D'Auvenay estate’s unswerving pursuit of perfection, making D'Auvenay Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013 a truly captivating addition to any discerning wine collector’s cellar.

Bright medium red. A ripe aroma of cherry liqueur is lifted by spice and mint high notes and complicated by menthol and licorice. Shows good texture for the vintage but today the strong licorice element dominates the wine's fruit. Finishes quite peppery, with slightly tough tannins. Not particularly approachable for a wine from clay-based soil. The crop level was down 30% due to hail and a bad flowering.Inc. VAT£99.85 -

Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru felt rather dilute on the nose -- perhaps picked too early? The palate is balanced but lacking real complexity and for want of a better word, the finish feels a little bland. I suspect this bottle had just gone awry and will seek to re-taste at a later date. Tasted May 2016.Inc. VAT£197.60 -

The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, which was two-third whole-cluster fruit, has a well-defined bouquet with very fine mineralité. These aromatics just speak of class. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh and supple tannins, finely-tuned acidity and commendable precision on the finish. This is a refined and sophisticated Clos du Roi in the making and one of de Montille's standouts of 2013.Inc. VAT£863.93 -

Pale, bright straw-yellow. Grapefruit, wet stone and a metallic note on the nose. Good concentration to the pineapple and ripe grapefruit flavors, with firm acidity nicely leavening a slight impression of sweetness. Finishes dry and persistent, with good crunchy minerality.Inc. VAT£157.45 -

(completely destemmed): Healthy deep, bright red. Very expressive, slightly metallic perfume of red berries and iron. Delivers a stimulating combination of sweet, almost candied fruits and penetrating acidity, with an herbal element contributing to the impression of inner-mouth lift. This very savory, intense Rugiens finishes a bit tough; in fact, it went into a shell in the glass.Inc. VAT£1,009.46 -
Vinous (91)
Bright, dark red. Much riper on the nose than the Beaune Grèves but still with a medicinal aspect to the complex aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and flint. Plush, dense, savory wine with excellent purity and lift, conveying strong mineral cut to the raspberry and redcurrant flavors. There's something Vosne-like in this wine's salinity. The slatey finish features suave, well-integrated tannins; really glistens and rises on the aftertaste. This has turned out very well.Inc. VAT£559.46 -

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts Christianne, which I asked to taste directly alongside the regular Malconsorts, has more delineation and precision, more mineralité coming through on the nose, veins of wet limestone and sea spray emerging with time. The palate is also noticeably different with greater tension and focus, a sense if coiled-up energy that is uncommon in this vintage. This surely illustrates the profound effects of terroir: a serious 2013 that should age with style.Inc. VAT£2,440.73 -

Bachelet's 2013 Charmes-Chambertin is striking. Translucent and pulsating in the glass, the 2013 possesses notable energy and fabulous overall balance. Dark red cherry, violet, leather and smoke gradually unfurl in a mysterious, beguiling Charmes that will provide fabulous drinking for many years.Inc. VAT£3,494.33 -

Bright and delineated, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is a terrific example of the year. Wild flowers, dark stone fruits, mint, crushed rocks, spices and leather are all given an extra kick of brightness in an energetic, chiseled Gevrey that delivers the goods. There is a lot to like here.Inc. VAT£920.66 -

Matured entirely in new oak, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling, elegant bouquet that is beautifully defined with superb mineralité coming through with aeration. Nothing flamboyant, nothing overstated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very harmonious, with a svelte texture and it positively glides toward the pure sorbet-like finish. The small number of owners will be glad they have some of this nectar - for me, one of the wines of the vintage.Inc. VAT£2,590.80 -

From 50-year-old vines that usually yield a generous 40 hectoliters per hectare, or thereabouts, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques has a very succinct and focused bouquet with mineral notes interwoven throughout the black cherry, blueberry and iodine scents. The palate is medium-bodied and is showing some of the 60% new oak at the moment, although there is sufficient fruit to absorb it. This has fine symmetry and focus with quite a long, tender finish. This is a sublime Gevrey-Chambertin to enjoy over the ensuing two decades, possibly more.Inc. VAT£648.49 -

The 2013 La Tâche Grand Cru is dazzling. Bright and nuanced, the 2013 sizzles with energy right out of the gate. The 2013 is just starting to open.
