Burghound (96)
A gorgeously spiced and perfumed nose is intensely floral in character while offering up notes of both red and dark currant, sandalwood, exotic Asian-style tea and discreet dried rose petal nuances. The muscular yet refined big-bodied flavors exude ample minerality onto the powerful, focused and once again compact, focused and explosively long finish. This too is indisputably built-to-age and I wouldn't be surprised if it required fully 20 years before it is fully ready. In sum this Richebourg is one of the finest wines of the 2014 vintage.Inc. Moderately saturated medium red. Livelier on the nose than the Charmois, with scents of black cherry, graphite and dark chocolate lifted by a floral quality. At once sweet and savory on the palate, with lovely acidity framing the red berry and cherry fruit flavors and extending the finish. Suaver and more pliant than the Charmois but the wine's more serious tannins and an element of peppery lift on the back end call for at least a couple years of patience.Inc. VAT£164.00 -

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1Er Cru Champ Canet from Boillot has a very fine stony, gunflint and pressed flower-scented bouquet. There is a soupçon of broodiness here although it does open nicely on the palate with pretty dried apricot and Clementine notes. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru la Truffière is initially a little awkward on the nose, but it coalesces in the glass, gaining more intensity and eventually unveiling fine pressed flower scents with a hint of marmalade. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, very focused and poised, saline in the mouth with a brisk, poised and energetic finish, a touch of blackcurrant leaf on the aftertaste. This is a well-crafted and quite compelling wine from J-M Boillot.Inc. VAT£220.79 -

Bright medium red. Sexy perfume of redcurrant, dark cherry, dried herbs and spices. Spicy, juicy and very dry but shows more floral lift than the Volnay Clos des Chènes. Precise and penetrating thanks to its strong mineral energy. Finishes with noble tannins that avoid the toughness of the Clos des Chènes and slowly building, savory persistence. Bouley told me that 55% of the crop was lost to hail and that partly for this reason he destemmed all of his fruit.Inc. VAT£191.09 -

(100% destemmed): Bright medium red. Subdued on the nose but clearly darker than the Caillerets, conveying fresh, higher-pitched aromas of black cherry, violet and licorice. This wine's sweetness and richness give it lovely early appeal. Generous on the front half but then distinctly more linear on the back end, finishing with a firm spine of tannins and a lingering redcurrant suggestion of red soil. Bouley noted that these vines were hit hard by hail but today it's the wine's sweetness that stands out, rather than any dryness.Inc. VAT£478.40 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Drouhin's 2014 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a wine that I might have underestimated from barrel, or perhaps it has just blossomed in bottle. It has a conservative bouquet that needs coaxing from the glass: red cherries, strawberry, scorched earth and just a touch of vanilla from the residual new oak waiting to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely tuned tannin and bright red fruit, tensile and poised with a taut, quite linear finish that has class and refinement. The 2014 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very refined nose not a million miles away from the Mazis-Chambertin, perhaps with even more delineation and mineralité. The palate is very refined with ripe tannin, lively and energetic; it is blessed with super-fine tannin and immense purity of fruit, as well as sensual and captivating on the finish. This is just a divine Griotte - divine. I expect it to ultimately rest at the top of my banded score. Returning to Domaine Joseph Roty two weeks after the untimely passing of Philippe Roty at 46 after a three year battle against cancer, as you would expect, one is filled with emotion far beyond that of appraising a new vintage. However, regretfully I have been in this same situation two or three times before and found that after obligatory condolences, there is always a desire to get back to some kind of normality and restore that sense of life going on. The blood stops running but the sap will always keep rising. And in a sense, Philippe is a strong spirit, a guiding influence at the domaine. Chatting with Pierre-Jean Roty, he told me how his brother had never relinquished until the very end, constantly asking him about the 2015 vintage. Photos and videos of the vines were bought in to his hospital and up until his last visits, he was still inspecting the vines and doing his best to continue as if he didn't have a matter of days left on this Earth. Perhaps one small consolation is that he died knowing that the domaine had been blessed with the 2015 vintage.Inc. VAT£3,087.12 -

But this very intense, fine-grained wine really resounds on the finish. Very closed today but has the balance and backbone to age gracefully. In Bond£1,280.41 -

A broad-ranging and more expressive nose consists of a wonderful range of spice elements together with notes of black tea, earth and floral hints. There is strikingly good intensity and real power to the overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that ooze a fine dry extract that imparts a suave, even velvety mouth feel to the robust finale that also delivers superb persistence. As the best examples of Musigny always are, this delivers that inimitable combination of power and finesse and in doing so deserves the high compliment of being a 'wow' wine.In Bond£2,028.00 -

Perhaps one small consolation is that he died knowing that the domaine had been blessed with the 2015 vintage. In Bond£2,554.00 -

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru les Caillerets has a very expressive bouquet, dark plum mixed with sous-bois and undergrowth. There is just a hint of cola here. The palate is refined and focused, a beautiful line of acidity here, gentle, so much so that is belies that power and persistence on the finish. Utterly charming, this will delight over many years. In Bond£726.00 -

A gentle application of wood sets off the intensely earthy dark currant and slightly gamy aromas. This resembles the Malconsorts in terms of its robust muscularity on the broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent punch while delivering a touch of animale character on the youthfully austere and persistent finish. This isn't a wine of finesse but it is impressively scaled and clearly built-to-age.In Bond£125.00 -

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet, conservative at first but opening nicely in the glass, here a mixture of red and dark fruit with an undertow of mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is still some oak to be absorbed towards the finish, but it is very harmonious, silky smooth with good depth on the finish. This has great potential - a classy Echézeaux. In Bond£175.00 -

The 2014 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet similar to the Grands Echézeaux, though at the moment albeit without the same degree of complexity. Perhaps this is just more backward at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity, nicely structured, perhaps just a little more conservative than the Grands Echézeaux, but maybe that means it will offer more once in bottle. One has the sense of a La Grande Rue just biding its time. Hopefully one day I will find out its qualities once in bottle. In Bond£2,656.00
The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.
Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.
In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.
Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
